What is a High Speed SD Card?
High-speed SD cards are high-performance versions of a secure digital memory card that read and write data faster than other SD cards. They also often come at a premium price but can be well worth the additional cost, depending on what you plan to use the cards for.
Function
High-speed SD memory cards are used to save data from digital devices. The cards can be used in digital cameras to save pictures, camcorders to store videos, MP3 players to keep all your music, cell phones to store contacts and even in some laptop computers to save data of all types.
Types
High-speed SD cards come in both a traditional formats as well as a "micro" versions that are physically smaller and typically used in more compact devices, such as cell phones.
Capacity
High-speed SD cards come in a variety of capacities ranging from just a few megabytes to several gigabytes. The size memory card you need depends on your usage: A memory card used in a camcorder will need to be several gigabytes in size, where as a memory card that is just holding contacts on your phone could easily be only a few megabytes.
Features
A high-speed SD card needs to only be used in situations where you need to write and read data exceptionally quickly. The most common use for the cards is in digital cameras by photographers who want to take continual photos over a single second. A high speed card can often handle saving 15 or more pictures in a second, whereas a traditional card would be able to handle only a few. High-speed cards are not typically used in MP3 players or cell phones because the high speed is not needed, though they would successfully operate in them.
Considerations
If you're buying a high-speed SD card to be used in your digital camera, it is best to purchase a larger card than you think you'll need. It is much better to have extra space on your memory card than to run out of room when you still want to take pictures.
