Dispose Of Lead Acid Batteries In Texas

Lead-acid batteries, such as motor vehicle batteries, are considered hazardous waste and cannot be thrown away in the trash, according to Texas state law. Disposing of lead-acid batteries improperly is a Class-C misdemeanor in Texas. However, it's easy to turn in lead-acid batteries to a battery retail store or a recycling center. Recycling lead-acid batteries keeps heavy metals, such as mercury, out of landfills and the environment and also conserves natural resources.

Instructions

1. Return your lead-acid batteries to a battery retail store or battery wholesale store when you buy new lead-acid batteries. Texas law requires retailers and wholesalers to accept an equal quantity of used lead-acid batteries when you purchase new lead-acid batteries.

2. Deliver used lead-acid batteries to a battery collection facility or battery recycling facility. Make sure the facility is authorized by the Environmental Protection Agency or by Texas state law. Find facilities in your area by contacting your city government. For example, Houston collects lead acid batteries at the Consumer Recycling Center at 5815 SW Freeway. Dallas collects lead acid batteries at the Home Chemical Collection Center (HC3) located at 11234 Plano Road.

3. Take used lead-acid batteries to a secondary lead smelter plant, which dissembles used lead-acid batteries and separates them into their component parts. Exide Technologies operates the only lead smelter plant in Texas, located at 7471 5th Street in Frisco.
