Make Lighted Window Boxes

Use a lamp chord, which you can thread into your window box to create light.

Window boxes are decorative accents that hang outside a window, and can be filled with flowers or colored stones, or just painted with cute designs to match a home. Another idea for window boxes is creating lighted ones, that will give off a soft light to add to the outdoor d cor of a home. Learning make lighted window boxes is the first step to getting these pieces of lighted d cor to pay off in the decorating of your home.

Instructions

1. Purchase a lamp chord, which is an electrical chord that has a light bulb socket at the end, from the local hardware store. Depending on the size of the window box, and how much light you want to give off, use that to pick out a chord. You can do a chord with a small bulb fixture at the end, or a standard 70 watt light bulb fixture at the end.

2. Measure the diameter of the light bulb end of your lamp chord. For example, with a standard chord, your diameter is probably going to be about an inch and a half or so in length, whereas for a smaller bulb it may only be an inch or so.

3. Trace out a circle in the bottom of your box that is slightly larger, say ¼ an inch, in diameter than the base of the light bulb end that you measured in step two. You can use a math compass to ensure that you get a perfect circle.

4. Use the thin blade of your electrical saw to cut out the circle over the line you have drawn. Go slowly to ensure that you don't cut the circle to big, or accidentally lose control of the blade and cut out blocks of the window box, or harm yourself.

5. Take the plug side of your lamp chord and pull it through the hole that you cut out, from the inside of the box. Pull chord all the way through until the light bulb end meets the hole. It should fit securely in the hole, or just atop the hole and you can now screw in a light bulb accordingly and plug in your window box.
