Hook Up A Home Surveillance Camera For Remote Viewing On A Laptop

You can create a video surveillance system that can be viewed on a laptop.


Advances in home surveillance technology have allowed homeowners to set up their own security systems and monitor them from anywhere in the world. Once you have taken the necessary steps to set up your own IP-based surveillance system, you will be able to view the images remotely on your laptop anywhere you have Internet access.








Instructions








1. Install the mounting bracket for your wireless IP surveillance camera where you would like the camera to be. The manufacturer's instructions will give detailed direction on properly install the mount, and properly install the camera to get maximum viewing angle.


2. Put the surveillance camera in place on the mount and install the batteries.


3. Shut down your laptop and your Internet modem.


4. Place a wireless router someplace where it can easily be connected to the Internet modem using an RJ45 cable. An RJ45 cable needs to be 100 meters or less.


5. Connect a desktop PC to the wireless router using an RJ45 cable. Each wireless router requires at least one hard-wired connection to function properly.


6. Load the router software on the desktop PC and then shut the PC down.


7. Turn on the equipment in the following order; the Internet modem, the wireless router and the desktop PC. The desktop PC should be able to access the Internet after everything has booted. If the desktop PC is not accessing the Internet, use the troubleshooting guide that came with the router or contact the router manufacturer.


8. Consult the wireless IP camera user's manual to find the IP address of the camera.


9. Turn on the laptop and make sure that the wireless Internet connection is accessing the Internet through the router. It will configure itself automatically.


10. Open an Internet browser on the laptop and input the IP address for the camera into the browser address bar. The images the camera is picking up will be displayed on the browser.


11. Bookmark the camera IP address. Whenever you have Internet access for your laptop, you can see what the camera is broadcasting.
