Features Of A Camera

A digital camera allows a camera to store multiple pictures without wasting film.

Cameras have had an important role in documenting the memorable events in someone's life as well as milestones throughout history. Through the years, cameras have been greatly improved and allow a photographer to dramatically change a picture's end result. Different digital camera features enable someone to capture a variety of perspectives while not having to store the image on film.

Lens

One of the main features for all types of cameras is the size and range of its lens. Lenses come in a variety of lengths and will determine how much of a scene will be shot and produced in a picture. Standard cameras usually have detachable lenses so the photographer can pick and choose the type of lenses they want depending on the shot. Many cameras' standard lenses come with an auto focus that allows the lenses to focus on an object in the center of the viewfinder. Some more professional photographers have wide-angle and wide-range lenses that allow them to capture a very broad or very zoomed-in shot.

Resolution

When people are considering purchasing a digital camera, the camera's resolution is what many people consider most important. Digital cameras measure this by megapixels or how many pixels make up an image. One-megapixel cameras have the worst resolution and are not often used anymore. Cameras with five or more megapixels are often used by professional photographers for large-scale prints such as posters or billboards. For more common uses, like taking pictures of family and friends for an album, a two- to four-megapixel camera might be best as the more megapixels, the more expensive the camera is.

Memory

The amount of memory a digital camera has is another important feature to many. Unlike standard cameras that store film, digital cameras use memory to store its pictures as files. The amount of pictures that a memory card can hold depends on the amount of pixels in the pictures that were taken. Average, two- to four-megapixel digital cameras have roughly eight megabytes of memory in the memory card that comes with it. This size memory card will only hold about 10 to 40 pictures, however minimizing the size or cropping a picture will allow for more room in the memory card. Eventually the pictures on the camera will have to be erased or downloaded onto a computer to be able to take more pictures. Larger memory cards, such as a 128 megabyte card, can be purchased to allow the photographer much more time before downloading the pictures.
