Specifications Of Laser Speed Guns

Police use laser speed guns to keep our streets safe.

Since their inception, police speed-detecting guns have been a major headache for any road traveler who might be driving with just a bit too much enthusiasm. Everyday across the country, police officers catch speeders with this relatively new laser technology. One example of a laser speed gun is offered by Digital Ally.

How it Works

According to Police Magazine, laser speed guns use numerous laser bursts bouncing off the target to determine its speed. Of course, this all happens in a fraction of a second. The first beam shoots and bounces off the car and returns to the receiving aperture. This burst establishes how far away the vehicle actually is. After several beams are fired and returned to the receiving aperture, the gun can establish how fast the car is moving. Police can choose their targets with the laser gun simply by aiming the laser gun (according to Police Magazine, most laser speed guns have cross hairs on top) at the vehicle and pulling the trigger.

Body

Like the science fiction movies of yesteryear, laser speed guns look vaguely like regular guns. For instance, the Digital Ally Police Laser Speed Gun is 9.75 inches from the bottom of the handle to the top of the head. The head is 4.5 inches wide and 6.75 inches long. The gun weighs 2.5 pounds. The laser gun has two white circles on the front of it. The circles are the receiving and transmitting apertures. There is a small red trigger that controls the shooting of the laser. The handle also functions as the battery compartment. On top of the head is a speed display. The back of the head has another display screen and other function options. There is a volume and brightness control. There is a mode menu selection that allows you to altar the speed and range you want to track. You can also factor in weather conditions and other obstructions. On the side of the head are connectors for accessories and other data entry.

Other Features

The Digital Ally Police Laser Speed Gun is built to be durable in case of heavy impact, and it's weather proof. The two C-cell batteries that power the gun allow for 24 to 32 hours of use. It can detect cars' speed at a maximum distance of 6,000 feet. Each scan should take one-third of a second for the information to come back to the gun. The gun will gauge speed with an accuracy of give or take one mile per hour. It judges distance within a half a foot. It will measure speed up to 200 miles per hour either coming towards the laser or going away. The laser beam has a divergence of 2.5 mill radian.
