Reuse Disposable Digital Cameras
One-time-use disposable cameras are a useful invention for some quick memories. They are also an easy way for camera companies to make money by selling and reselling digital cameras and charging to download the pictures. You can get around this problem by converting your one-time-use digital camera into a camera that can be downloaded repeatedly--for free--from your home.
Instructions
1. Locate the sticker on the bottom of your disposable camera telling consumers that the camera cannot be hooked up to a computer or television.
2. Peel the sticker off to reveal the camera port underneath it. This is the connector that stores use to download the photos.
3. Take the USB cord with the Type B female connector on the end and cut off that connector with your pliers or wire cutter.
4. Strip about an inch of the insulation off of the USB cord so that four internal cords are exposed; there should be green, black, white and red wires.
5. Solder the wires onto the Palm m100 connector. The male end of the Palm series connector has 10 exposed pins on the outside. They are located on only one side of the connector, so they should not be hard to locate. Holding the connector in your left hand so that you see the pins (they are facing toward you), the top pin will be referred to as pin 1, the second one down will be pin 2 and so on. Solder the black wire of the USB cable to pin 1, the white wire to pin 2, the green wire to pin 3 and the red wire to pin 5 (you will skip pin 4).
6. Download and install PV2 Tools and Clear2Receive on your computer. You can transfer digital pictures to your computer with these two programs. (To download them for free, see the Resources section.) Both programs let you customize how and where you want the pictures displayed on your computer. Make sure to read the directions and installation manuals carefully before installing the files so that you know what they do and how they do it.
7. Take pictures on your camera, and once the camera is full, connect the camera to the computer with your homemade cord. Follow the onscreen instructions for downloading the pictures to your hard drive, and then deleting them from the camera. Once the pictures are deleted, use the camera to take more pictures; you can repeat the process as often as you want.
