Make Dvd Wall Storage

DVDs are fun and entertaining, but what isn't so fun is arranging and organizing all those DVD cases. If you are a real entertainment nut, you probably have hundreds of them, and where do you store them all? The wall in your living room or entertainment area provides the most convenient place and likely the most room for easy DVD storage. For this exercise we will make a seven-tier wall DVD storage case that is 57 inches high to allow 1 inch of extra board length on the bottom.

Instructions

1. Cut two pieces of melamine to 56 inches tall by 6 inches wide. DVDs are 5 1/4 inches wide by 7 1/2 inches tall; this accounts for 1/2 inch of space between each 7 1/2-inch high shelf slot for 1/4-inch melamine and 1/4 inch of extra empty space. If you want to build one larger or smaller than this size, alter these measurements.

2. Cut seven 1/4-inch melamine boards to the length of 48 inches and 6 inches wide.

3. Channel rout 1/4-inch slots across the width of both boards using a 1/4-inch deep square channel router bit. Start 1 inch from the bottom, then space out the channels so there is a 7 1/2-inch gap between each one.

4. Set the two longer storage rack sides into clamps on a woodworking table so they face upright and the channel grooves are facing each other.

5. Apply wood glue to the edges of shelving boards. Slide the boards into the channels you just routed.

6. Leave the shelf in the clamps for now. On the outside of the rack, drill pilot holes through the outer boards and into the horizontal shelf boards, then screw in 1-inch screws to secure them. Repeat this for each shelf along the rack.

7. Attach two straight metal braces at a 45-degree angle, diagonally across the top corners of the shelf on the side facing you, so part of the metal brace is exposed in the top corner. Drill a 1/8-inch hole through the middle of the brace.

8. Install the shelf against the wall, and drive screws through the metal braces into the wall. If it is drywall, drill a small pilot hole into the wall first, then insert anchors into this hole before attaching the storage rack to the wall.
