A dual-voice coil subwoofer is a popular choice for an audio system, due to its flexibility in wiring. Because of the two voice coils, the subwoofer can be wired in series or in parallel, effectively halving or doubling the impedance. The process of connecting the subwoofer is straightforward and doesn't require any special tools.
Instructions
Wiring in Parallel to Double Resistance
1. Identify the positive and negative terminals on your subwoofer. In each set of terminals, there will be a post marked "+" for positive and a post marked "-" for negative.
2. Connect a piece of speaker wire between the amplifier's positive and negative terminal posts and the positive and negative posts of the subwoofer's first set of speaker terminals.
3. Connect a piece of speaker wire between the first set of speaker terminals and the second set of speaker terminals, connecting positive to positive and negative to negative.
Wiring in Series to Halve Resistance
4. Identify the positive and negative terminals on your subwoofer. In each set there will be a post marked "+" for positive and a post marked "-" for negative.
5. Connect a piece of speaker wire between the amplifier's positive and negative terminal posts and the positive and negative posts of the subwoofer's first set of speaker terminals.
6. Connect a single length of wire from the positive post of the first set of speaker terminals to the negative post of the second set of speaker terminals.
7. Connect a single length of wire from the negative post of the first set of speaker terminals to the positive post of the second set of speaker terminals.
