With the vast number of electronic devices available to the average consumer today, it means there are also just as many remote controls to master. If you don't have the time or patience to learn each remote, a universal remote may be beneficial. A Philmore brand universal remote is one of the more popular brands. The way to configure it with each separate electronic device is by inputting codes, which are easy to find if you know where to look.
Instructions
Using the Code Search Option
1. Manually turn on the electronic device you are trying to configure for use with the Philmore universal remote control.
2. Press and hold the "code search" button on the universal remote. It is located on the lower left of the main arrow pad. Press and hold the button until the indicator light (located at the top left of the remote) turns on. Release the code search button.
3. Press the proper device button, such as VCR or TV, on the universal remote. If you are trying to search for a code for a VCR or TV, press the VCR or TV button, respectively. They are located directly below the indicator light and the power button. After you push the proper button, you will see the indicator light flash once and then remain on again.
4. Press the power button until the device you are trying to program shuts off. Since the universal remote is manually searching through each code, you may have to press the power button as many as 300 times. If you accidentally skip over it, or press the power button one too many times, press the channel down button to back up.
5. Press the "mute" button to finish the sequence and program that code into the universal remote. After this, you are done programming the remote for that device. Be sure to make note of the code, write it down and keep it in a safe place, as it may be useful later--you will likely see the code displayed on the television screen.
Manual Search of Codes
6. Search for the electronic device code in the Philmore user's manual. This is, sometimes, an easier way to find the code than by using the code search button. Flip to the back of the manual where there are a few pages of electronic brand names listed.
7. Find the brand name of the electronic device you are trying to program in the list, and make note of the code. Note that, sometimes, there is more than one code per brand, so make note of all of them.
8. Program the code into your remote using the manual's instructions to see if it works. If there were more than one code for your brand, you may need to try them all to find the one that works. If none of the codes work, or you cannot find your brand listed, you may need to go back and use the code search option.
