The Advantages Of Night Vision Goggles

Night vision goggles provide visibility to areas that attract crime.

Night vision goggles (NVG) are optical devices that allow the wearer to see poorly lit or completely dark areas. NVG provide a dim, slightly murky visibility to images, but one that is a drastic improvement upon the natural surroundings of those images. According to the Global Security website, the basic way that NVG operate is as follows: "Light enters the NVG through an objective lens and strikes a photo cathode. ... The energy charge accelerates ... and strikes a phosphor screen ... where the image is focused. The eyepiece magnifies the image." The advantages of NVG are mainly relevant to the military and police.

Maintaining Stealth

Historically, armies tried to avoid fighting at night as they would have to light fires or use searchlights, thus giving away their tactical positions or secret locations of troops or soldiers. Similarly, lawbreakers can see, and thus avoid, a police officer or security guard patrolling a school or building with a large flashlight. NVG allow you to attack or defend without the use of a light aid, which could put you in danger.

24-Hour Operability

For certain professions, nighttime was often connected to obligatory downtime, a period to rest, recharge and wait for daylight. NVG mean that armies can operate 24 hours a day, moving locations, repairing infrastructure, and planning and orchestrating their next moves. Search-and-rescue teams can similarly operate 24 hours a day, utilizing crucial hours to help people who are lost, injured or missing.

Spotting Danger

Some criminals rely on the dark to protect themselves and hide their illegal activities. Areas that attract lawbreakers or criminal activity simply become less threatening with NVG and crime more preventable. For example, places like darkened building entryways, ports, borders, nuclear facilities, national monuments, unlit hallways and parking lots can no longer conceal criminals in a cloak of darkness if you're wearing NVG. You'll see the people in question long before they see you, if they see you at all.
