Most 1999 Ford Taurus models came equipped with a factory AM/FM radio that included a cassette deck. The compact disc changer was optional on the Taurus. If you purchased the vehicle with the standard stereo and want to install a CD changer, there are some aftermarket options. Another possibility is to remove the factory stereo and have an aftermarket car receiver/CD player installed.
Pioneer CDX-FM687
The Pioneer CDX-FM687 is a six-disc CD changer that can be used as an add-on to the existing Ford Taurus factory radio. This is a universal CD changer, and the CD is played through your FM tuner. Since the music is played through the FM tuner, the music quality might not be as clear or sharp. A remote control comes with the unit for easy switching of CDs and tracks. The changer also supports CD-R and CD-RW types and often installed in the trunk of the car or on the floor near the passenger seat.
Pioneer CDX-FM1287
Pioneer's CDX-FM1287 is an upgrade over the CDX-FM687 model noted in Section 1. This changer works in the same manner as the six-capacity changer, but can hold 12 CDs. The CD changer unit can be positioned on any angle or position without affecting the playback of the CD. The changer also comes with more modulation frequencies to achieve the clearest sound reception possible from the FM modulator. A wireless remote is included. The 12-disc changer is slightly larger than the 6-disc changer and might be best suited for installation in the trunk.
Replace Factory Stereo
Purchase a new car stereo. Take out the old receiver and replace it with a newer, more advanced unit that includes a CD player. Since this is an older vehicle, you must be sure that the radio fits into your dashboard. Many websites and stores such as Best Buy and Crutchfield.com can provide recommendations as to which car stereos are compatible with the 1999 Taurus. There are several advantages to installing a new stereo, including better sound and more CD changer options with direct connections, rather than FM modulators. That said, many car stereos have dropped the CD changer option, instead utilizing auxiliary plugs for external devices such as MP3 players and iPods.
