TiVo is a digital video recorder (DVR) that saves video content to a hard drive. You can schedule and record your favorite programs in addition to fast forwarding through commercials. Additionally, you can use your TiVo to stream music, videos and view your photos. If you discover noise coming from your TiVo, the source is either the unit's fan or hard drive. Both of these components make noise, but very small amounts. The fan is used to keep the electronic components inside your DVR cool. The hard drive has moving parts that spin and cause noise.
Instructions
1. Place your ear up to your TiVo DVR device. You should hear the internal fan spinning and your hard drive spinning.
2. Step away from your TiVo DVR and turn on your TV with the volume at a moderate level. If you still hear noise coming from your TiVo unit, you may have a dirty fan or a failing hard drive.
3. Contact TiVo if your device is still under warranty to receive a new unit. If your device is out of warranty, you can perform the following actions to possibly alleviate the problem: clean or replace the hard drive.
4. Purchase a can of spray air and disconnect your Tivo by removing the plug and cable wires. Remove the device from where it resides and place on a flat surface. Spray the air around the surface of the unit and inside the vents where the fan resides.
5. Connect your power supply and cable wires back to the TiVo DVR. Power on the TiVo device. If the noise is still there you may have a failing hard drive.
6. Contact a certified professional to troubleshoot the hard drive and replace it if applicable.
