Problems With The Sirius Sportster

The most recent version of the Sirius Sportster is the Sportster 5.

The Sirius Sportster is a satellite radio receiver designed for use in cars. There are several models for sale, including the Sportster 4 and Sportster 5. While the Sportster has received generally positive reviews, some problems have been reported.

Types of Sportsters

The most recent version of the Sirius Sportster is the Sportster 5; however, the Sportster 4 and Sportster 3 are still listed on the Sirius.com. Older models (such as the Sportster and Sportster Replay) are no longer listed. All models have been reported to suffer from some isolated issues, although older models tend to be more prone to long-lasting problems such as the permanent "acquiring a signal" message.

General Reception Problems

Some customers have complained that Sirius radio reception can be unreliable, particularly in tunnels or under bridges. This problem is not unique to Sportster models but can be present in all satellite radios (and, in fact, all satellite-based communications.) Reception inside buildings can be particularly difficult, especially in areas far removed from satellite signal repeaters. Some Sirius customers have reported this problem when they try to use their Sportster inside their home.

Longer-Lasting Problems

Numerous Sirius Sportster customers have a reported a longer-lasting problem with their radio reception. In most cases, the radio works correctly for a period of time. Then, for no obvious reason, the unit will display either an "acquiring signal" or "antenna not detected" message and will not play audio. Adjusting the antenna, turning the unit off and then on and changing the station do not solve the problem.

Causes/Solutions

No specific causes or solutions have been determined. In some cases, the problem is due to an old unit simply breaking down; in others, the unit is defective from the start. Generally, if adjustments to the antenna do not solve the problem, there are no obstructions to the signal (such as buildings or tunnels) and the connection between the radio and the dock is good, the simplest solution is to purchase a new unit. If the unit is still under warranty, Sirius should replace it free of charge.

Unit Compatibility

Unfortunately, newer models of Sportsters may not be compatible with accessories (such as the home cradle) from older models. As a result, if your older-model Sportster develops a long-term reception problem, you may have to upgrade the unit and its accessories. Sportster 3, 4 and 5 are generally compatible with the same accessories. New Sportster units are available from Sirius and authorized retailers.
