Dual, a German electronics company, has been manufacturing turntables and record player technology since the late 1920s. The Dual 1229 turntable was manufactured from 1972 to 1974 and operates at three speeds: 45, 33 1/3 and 78 RPMs (rotations per minute). The most common repair among vintage turntables is belt drive replacement. A rubber belt inside the turntable wraps around a belt motor, allowing the turntable to spin. Replacing the belt means partially dismantling the turntable.
Instructions
1. Turn off the turntable and unplug the power cable from the nearest receptacle. Lift the turntable's protective, plastic cover so it is in the upright position.
2. Remove any records from the turntable and remove the rubber dust cover. This is the rubber mat that the record sits on.
3. Unscrew the spindle from the center alignment rod and remove the C-shaped clip from the turntable. Grasp the platter and lift it out of the turntable assembly. The platter is the disc-like piece revealed by the dust cover. Removing the platter reveals the inside of the turntable.
4. Remove the broken rubber belt and any excess debris from inside the turntable. Apply some isopropyl or rubbing alcohol to a clean cloth or rag. Wipe down the inside of the turntable around the belt motor. Allow a few minutes for the inside of the turntable to dry.
5. Place the new turntable belt around the belt motor inside the turntable. Align the belt with the small lip along the outside of the belt drive motor. Replace the platter, "C" clip and spindle. Place the rubber mat back on top of the platter.
