Memory cards are used to store data. They can come from electronics such as cameras or music players, then be inserted into computers to move files back and forth. There have been many types of memory cards introduced, and the most commonly used ones are Secure Digital (SD), CompactFlash, xD and SmartMedia.
SD
SD cards are the most popular ones on the market. They come in various capacities, with the highest an 8-gigabyte card. SD cards also come in micro and mini versions.
CompactFlash
CompactFlash cards come in a number of brands, speeds and sizes. Some of the most popular are SanDisk's Ultra II, Extreme III and IV, and Extreme Ducati. Some come in high speed.
xD
xD cards have been around for a while and are not being used in the newest electronics. They are still available, though, and come in capacities of as much as 2 gigabytes.
Memory Sticks
There several companies that make memory sticks in sizes from 64 megabytes to 2 gigabytes. The actual size of the stick varies, so one stick might not fit all products.
SmartMedia
SmartMedia cards were one of the first memory cards introduced. They are made to hold a smaller amount of data--the largest ones are 128 megabytes--so they are no longer popular.
