Though small in size, SD cards are capable of storing large amounts of data.
Secure digital (SD) memory cards are miniature storage devices containing audio, image and video files. These cards are manufactured in a variety of different storage and physical sizes. SD cards are used in most forms of digital cameras and other digital devices.
Data
SD cards are used as a way of transferring photographs or video files from a digital camera to a computer, audio and image files to a cellular device or video files from a camcorder to a computer. The data is stored on the SD card, though certain file types may not be recognized in some digital devices.
Format
SD cards may be subject to routine formatting in order to ensure maximum capacity and operation from the card. This process may be done by inserting the card into a computer and requesting a format of the drive. All data stored on the card will be lost during this process.
Storage
SD cards may hold between 1 and 4 GB of data. SDHC (high capacity) cards hold a maximum volume of up to 32 GB.
Size
SD cards are available in three sizes. A regular SD card, used in most digital cameras, is 32 by 24 mm. A miniSD card is slightly smaller, measuring 21.5 by 20 mm. A microSD card, used primarily in mobile phones, is 11 by 15 mm. Consumers must understand the card dimension their digital device holds before purchasing an SD card.
Versatility
The information that these tiny cards contain is generally read universally with most forms of digital cameras, camcorders, cell phones, MP3 players and computers.
