Differences Between Sony Bravia L Series & M Series

The Sony Bravia L-Series KDL-32L4000 and the Sony Bravia M-Series KDL-32M4000 at first glance will seem like the same television, but on closer inspection, one difference can be seen. The letters L and M stand side by side in the alphabet, and as televisions, they are not too far apart either. But there are differences between the two models and these should be known to a customer before purchasing either.

Dimensions

The Sony L-Series is 31.8 inches by 23 inches by 9.5 inches. Without its pedestal it measures 31.7 inches by 21.6 inches by 4 inches. It weighs 35.3 pounds with its pedestal and 30.5 pounds without.

The M-series weighs in a little heavier at 36 pounds with a pedestal weighing 5 pounds. It is 31.9 inches by 23 inches by 9.5 inches.

Video and Audio

A 3D combo filter is present in the L-series. This is not a feature that allows the viewer to see 3D images as it sounds; it actually boosts color purity and stabilizes the video image. The L-series also has pulldown technology, which fixes frame rate errors to decrease instances of image distortion. The picture mode comes in three options: custom, standard and vivid. Sound quality is boosted in the L-series by Dolby Digital.

The M-series does not have pulldown technology but does feature a Bravia Engine 2 video processor, which optimizes contrast to produce high image quality. It is also equipped with Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE). This boosts contrast and reduces the level of backlight. Sound is handled by an MTS stereo system and it also possesses Dolby Digital.

Display Specs

The 32-inch screen of the L-series has an aspect ratio of 16:9, which is the ratio of the width compared to the height. It has a high definition resolution of 1366 by 768p and an on-screen contrast ratio of 2000:1. The screen can be viewed with a clear picture from a 178 degree angle, looking in from any direction.

The M-series has a slightly smaller screen at 31.5 inches with the same aspect ratio. It matches the L-series in resolution and viewing angle, but has a better on-screen contrast ratio of 2500:1. It also has a dynamic contrast ratio of 9000:1.

Connections

The L-series has plenty of options for video input, including two HDMI connectors, one S-video socket, two composite and two component inputs.

The M-series adds to this list with a high definition PC input and S-video detection to aid the S-video connection.

Other Features

Parents can guard their children from viewing programs not suitable for their age with the parental control feature that is included in the L-series. A sleep timer that can be set from 15 to 90 minutes means that falling asleep in front of the TV doesn't mean wasted electricity. The television also includes a multiple language display, program guide and picture-in-picture mode.

The M-series matches these features but improves on parental control by adding channel block, which sets a password for selected channels.
