Problems With Jvc Digital Video Cameras

JVC digital cameras (camcorders) come in different sizes, shapes and offer a variety of features for different expert levels. Some support HD shooting modes and others are standard shooting mode. Regardless of your camcorder model, you are likely to experience occasional power, display and recording issues that must be solved to keep your camcorder performing optimally.

Power Problems

If your JVC camcorder is not turning on, always check the battery power, especially if it has been running on battery power. More likely than not, the battery is drained and needs recharging. Connect it to AC power rather than running it on battery power when it is not necessary. By default, JVC camcorders turn off after 5 minutes without use. To resolve this problem, simple disable the "Auto-Shut Off" setting on your camcorder. Use your operating manual, as it may vary depending on the model of your JVC camcorder.

Recording Problems

If your JVC camcorder is not recording footage or shooting still pictures (some models have this feature), check the memory card and make sure the lock switch is disabled. If the memory card is full, delete or transfer footage to make room for others. A blinking recording light is usually a sign that the camcorder is overheating. Turn it off immediately and allow it cool for at least 30 minutes. This usually happens when the camcorder has been used consistently for lengthy periods without being turned off.

Lens and Display Problems

A black screen could mean too much light is seeping into the lens, especially if you are shooting footage in direct sunlight. Whitish lines on the display monitor can mean high exposure settings that conflict with bright backgrounds. Adjusting your exposure settings can solve this problem. If your images appear blurry or unclear, always use the focus settings. Additionally, clean the lens using a lint-free cloth and some lens solution to remove grease and dirt particles that distort images.

Hard Drive Problems

If your recording footage to a JVC digital camcorder that uses a hard drive for storage, make sure that it is not full if you are running into capture problems. When transferring footage from your camcorder's hard drive, always make sure the USB/Firewire cable is properly connected to the computer and that it is actually detecting the camcorder. If the computer is not detecting your camcorder's hard drive, check the playback settings and make sure it is set to "Playback" instead of "Record."

Warning

As much as possible, avoid using your JVC digital camcorder in extremely cold or hot situations because it not only diminishes the battery life faster than in normal conditions, but it also could damage the lens and other internal functions. Do not attempt to perform additional troubleshooting steps and repairs on your camcorder because you risk damaging it further. Contact JVC support for additional troubleshooting guidelines (see link in Resources).
