A 4 GB SD (Secure Digital) card adds plenty of memory backup to the device you plan to use it in, whether a digital camera, phone or computer. Before your card can be used, it needs to be formatted. It is best to format your card in its intended device. For example, an SD card that you intend to use in a digital camera should be formatted on that device. When you do this you know that the file types will be compatible with it. However, if you are unsure of format using your device, or you plan to use it to save data from your computer, you can format the SD card on your PC.
Instructions
Format With a Computer
1. Insert the 4 GB SD card into a card reader slot on your PC. If you do not have built-in card slots, insert the SD card into a USB card reader, and insert the card reader into a USB port. If you are using a micro SD card (mini) you must first insert the micro card into a micro SD card adapter, which comes with the micro SD card, and then insert it into the card reader.
2. Click on "Start" and then double click on "Computer." If you use Windows XP it will say "My Computer." In the source list on the left side of the "Computer" window, locate your SD Card. It will usually say "Removable disc" and have a drive letter after it.
3. Right click on the SD card listing, and select "Format" from the options you are given. When the format pop-up opens, select FAT32 as the file type.
4. Select "Start" and then confirm that you want to format the card if you are asked. This may take a few moments, depending on whether there is currently data on the card or not.
Format in the Device
5. Insert the 4 GB SD card into the memory card slot.
6. Power on the device, and open the "Menu" screen.
7. Find the location of your "Memory Card." This can be different for each device. In a camera, it usually has its own file, but for an MP3 player, phone or other device it may be under "Settings" or "Tools and Settings."
8. Select "Memory Card," and then look for "Options."
9. Select "Format," and then confirm that you wish to format the device.
