Configure A Graphic Equalizer

Configuring a graphic equalizer to your personal taste can really enhance the enjoyment of listening to your favorite music. That's because, in configuring the equalizer, you'll have three to 15 times the amount of control over what you hear. It's true that all those sliders can look intimidating at first, but through working with them methodically, your ears and eyes will learn which sliders control which frequencies of sound, and you'll be able to achieve a configuration that suites you. The important thing to remember is that, to do this well, you need only know what you like to hear.

Instructions

1. Set all the sliders on the equalizer to the line marked 0dB, which will make them form a straight horizontal line across the center of the unit.

2. Choose a piece of music that's representative of what you most often listen to and start it playing.

3. Make small adjustments to the various sliders, to get a feel for how each one affects the sound. Start with the mid-range sliders, which are those closest to the middle of the unit, and then replace them to 0dB.

4. Adjust the bass sliders on the left and the treble sliders on the right, noticing the change that each makes to the sound. Reset them to 0dB.

5. Adjust the sliders to contour the overall sound by working in the same order of mid range, bass and treble. Find a place for each that sounds good to you, whether boosted (above 0dB), cut (below 0dB) or flat (right at 0dB). Leave it there and move to the next one.

6. Readjust your sliders to make finer adjustments where necessary, based on the overall sound you're achieving. Do this until you're pleased with the sound.

7. Make a simple diagram on an index card of where your sliders are set and then return all sliders to 0dB. This is to see how you like the sound you set in comparison to no added equalization. Everything we hear is referential and this step helps our ears to not play tricks on us.

8. Repeat these steps for any different types of music you like to listen to, making a simple diagram for each on an index card to be kept someplace accessible.
