The Best Vacations in the U.S. for a Family
Everyone remembers that great family vacation--the vacation that continues to evoke memories year after year, the vacation that was full of discovery, the vacation that bonded the entire family. But what are the ingredients of such a trip, and how do you determine where to go and what to do? Participation and careful planning by the entire family is the key.
Planning
Above all, vacations should be fun for the whole family and not focus on any one family member. What do the kids enjoy? Are they close in age? Can adults and kids participate (and have fun) with the same activity? What will stimulate everyone? Here are a few ideas.
A Resort Vacation
Probably the most popular family venue is the resort vacation--and for good reason. Resorts offer a variety of activities, and most are designed to appeal to all ages. A typical example is Disney World in Orlando, Florida, where the theme park can be combined with education (EPCOT Center), movie-making (Universal Studios) and outdoor activities like swimming. Sea World, the Kennedy Space Center and ocean beaches are all nearby. Similar resorts include the Wisconsin Dells water park near Madison, and Disneyland in Anaheim, California.
The Heritage Vacation
For a family with older children, consider an educational heritage vacation. Washington, D.C., tops the list of possibilities, and its free museums can tantalize and educate at the same time. The popular Smithsonian Air and Space museum is home to actual spacecraft, with mind-challenging exhibits. The Capitol, White House and memorials evoke a strong sense of national significance and pride for all family members. Similar spots for heritage vacations include Boston, Williamsburg, Virginia, and the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.
The Adventure Vacation
For true family bonding, try an adventure vacation. These can include a simple stay in a national park or an elaborate week at a dude ranch. Horseback riding, hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting--all are possibilities, and each can be enjoyed by an entire family. Adventure vacations include trips to national parks like Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain, Grand Canyon and Great Smokey, but can also include local parks and preserves.
The Stay-at-Home Vacation
Don't overlook the "home" vacation. While it may not sound exotic, local attractions should not be underestimated and can offer a great family experience. Choose a local museum one day, a sports outing the next, and a lake, beach or amusement park after that. Top off each day with a picnic or dinner at a special restaurant. Sometimes we tend to overlook the local highlights.
