The AT&T 1738 answering machine has several different settings that you can adjust to suit your preferences. The settings range from the number of rings before the machine picks up the call to whether the machine announces the phone number of the person who called prior to playing back the message. You can also change the security code you use to listen to your messages while you are away from home.
Instructions
1. Press and hold the "Setup" button on the left side of the AT&T 1738 answering machine control panel until the machine announces "Voice Is."
2. Push "Annc/Skip" or "Memo/Repeat" on the answering machine to choose between English or Spanish. The LCD screen will show "E" for English and "S" for Spanish when choosing.
3. Press and release "Set Up." You will hear "Number of Rings Is" from the machine.
4. Push the "Annc/Skip" or "Memo/Repeat" buttons to choose the number of rings before the answering machine picks up. You can choose two through seven rings or the toll saver 2/4 or toll saver 4/6 option. The toll saver options can save you money on long distance toll charges when calling your machine to listen for any messages. For example, if you set the machine for toll saver 2/4, the answering machine will pick up after two rings if you have a message and four rings if you don't have a message. You know you can hang up the phone and save on long distance charges if the phone rings three times because you don't have any messages on your machine.
5. Press "Set Up," and you will hear "Remote Access Code." Push the "Annc/Skip" or "Memo/Repeat" buttons until the first number of the three-digit number you want to create appears on the screen, and then press "Set Up." Enter the second and then third numbers in your code.
6. Push "Set Up," and you will hear "Announcement Monitor Is," which allows you to set whether you hear the answering machine greeting when you let the machine pick up the call. Select "On" or "Off."
7. Repeat Step 6 for "Number Announce Is," which determines if the answering machine announces the incoming call's phone number between the second and third ring; "Store Number Is," which determines if the machine announces the telephone number before playing back each message; "Accept Blocked Calls Is," which determines whether the machine picks up calls that have blocked telephone numbers; and "Message Alert Is," which determines whether the answering machine beeps every 15 seconds when a new message is recorded by the machine.
8. Press the "Play/Stop" button to save your new settings when completed.
