A polarized filter can reduce light glare from water surfaces.
Camera filters alter the entry of light into the camera lens. The altered light changes the image captured. Polarized lens filters are used to reduce glare or to adjust color and contrast. Installed over the camera lens, a polarizing filter is useful for darkening a blue sky and can create additional contrast when used in conjunction with black-and-white image captures. Polarized filters are generally loose fitted to the lens allowing rotation of the lens for optimal visual effects.
Light Wave Vibration
Non-polarized light vibrates in a full 360-degree rotation. Essentially, the light wavelength vibrates in all directions. Non-polarized light is light directly from the sun, or from reflected surfaces.
True Color Reflection
An object is visually recognizable by the reflected light off the surface of the object. Colors, sheen and shadowing are created through light reflection. True color reflection of light wavelengths vibrate in a full 360-degree wavelength.
Polarized Light
Polarized light, such as a glare, only vibrates in a single direction. Because colored light vibrates in all directions, to remove a glare, a filter only needs to block the vibrations being produced by the glare.
Polarized Filter
A polarized filter only allows vibrating light to pass through in one direction. Because colored light vibrates in all directions, no matter how the polarized filter is rotated, the colored light passes through the filter.
Glare Reduction
Rotate the polarized filter perpendicular to the glare's light vibration to reduce or eliminate the glare. During rotation, as the polarized filter becomes perpendicular with the vibration of the glare, the glare is reduced or eliminated. The reduction in glare will allow colors to be more fully seen and increase the color contrast of the image. Further rotation will result in the polarized filter aligning with the glare's vibration angle, returning the glare to the image.
