There are two different signals that carry the audio information from your head unit to other equipment like amplifiers and speakers. One signal is called a "low-level" signal and the other is called a "high-level" signal. The low-level signal is carried by RCA cables and uses the two phono outputs usually colored red and white. The high-level signal is the amplified information that is sent through the speaker wires. When connecting an amplifier, you will need a low-level output, but if your head unit doesn't have a low-level output you can use a high and low impedance adapter.
Instructions
1. Remove your head unit from the dashboard. As there are several different head units on the market, refer to your head unit's owner's manual for proper deck removal procedure.
2. Locate the two purple wires and the two green wires in the wire harness coming from the back of the deck. The solid-colored wires are the positive wires for the rear speakers and the wires with a white line on them are the negative wires. The purple wires are for the right rear speaker and the green wires are for the left rear speaker.
3. Expose the wire underneath the colored jacket by carefully making a cut through the jacket with your wire cutters. Do not cut through the wire underneath the jacket, just cut through the jacket. Slide the jacket down the wire to expose the bare wires. Do this to all four wires.
4. Attach the wire on the adapter that is marked right positive (+) to the bare wire on the solid purple wire. You will do this by twisting the bare wire at the end of the right positive wire coming from the adapter around the bare wire on the purple wire. Hold the two wires together by wrapping them with electrical tape. Do the same thing for the wire marked right negative (-), connecting it to the purple wire with the line on it.
5. Attach the wire on the adapter that is marked left positive (+) to the bare wire on the solid green wire. You will do this by twisting the bare wire at the end of the left positive wire coming from the adapter around the bare wire on the green wire. Hold the two wires together by wrapping them with electrical tape. Do the same thing for the wire marked left negative (-), connecting it to the green wire with the line on it.
6. Insert the plugs on the end of the RCA cable into the adapter. There are two outputs on the adapter and two plugs on the RCA cable. Match the colors of the plug with the output.
7. Insert the other end of the RCA cable into the audio input on your amplifier by inserting the colored plug into the matching output.
