When looking to purchase a range finder for either golf or hunting, you may wonder what the differences are between the two. Knowing these differences will help you select the range finder that's right for you.
Basic Systems
Most digital range finders on the market today use the same basic system. A beam of laser light is fired from the unit, and its reflection is received by a built-in sensor. The device automatically measures the time elapsed between firing and receiving the laser beam and calculates the distance to the target.
Hunting Range Finders
Hunting range finders will augment this system with features designed with hunters in mind. The units themselves tend to be smaller and more rugged. They sport camouflage prints and have grips and controls for use while wearing gloves. The targeting system is set to work in wooded areas. High-end units will also supply additional information to hunters like correction for bullet trajectory over long distances.
Golf Range Finders
Units made with golfers in mind will offer different features. Their range-finding systems are designed to target single flags in open areas, and additional information is provided by the unit such as slope angles and club recommendations. They also tend to be less durable.
