Get 300 Dpi From My Nikon Camera

Many printers recommend image files of 200 or 300 dpi to ensure quality printing.

Most Nikon digital single-lens reflex cameras can be set to one of three image-quality options for JPG files: normal, fine and basic. This setting tells the camera how much to compress an image file. Also, the image size can be set to large, medium or small. Setting the image quality to fine and the image size to large will produce an image file with the equivalent of 300 dpi (dots per inch). For COOLPIX cameras, the image mode should be set to high to obtain the same result.

Instructions

Setting the Image Size on a Nikon DSLR

1. Turn on the camera and enter the camera's menu system by pressing the "Menu" button.

2. Use the navigation arrows to select the Shooting menu. The next screen will contain a list of the menu options along the right side: navigate using the up and down arrows and select using the right and left arrows.

3. Change the image quality to fine. Press the center "OK" button to accept the change.

Download A Dvd To A Mac Hard Drive

DVDs can store many types of video that can be saved to a Mac hard drive.

Downloading, or ripping, a DVD to a Mac hard drive may violate federal law regarding copyright infringement. For this reason, many DVDs come with a copy-proof seal or an equivalent security precaution to protect the video on the disc. Whether a DVD can be copied depends on both federal law and the production team that created the video. Depending on the DVD, free software is available to download video from a DVD to a Mac hard drive for later playback or archiving.

Instructions

1. Go to the HandBrake website and download the Mac OS 10.5 / 10.6 version of HandBrake by clicking on "Download HandBrake" and following the instructions. For older Macs, other versions of HandBrake are available.

2. Open the downloaded file, and double click on the HandBrake icon. The folder will unzip and launch the HandBrake installer. Follow HandBrake's on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.

3. Insert the DVD into your computer's disc drive. Launch HandBrake, and wait for the program to load the DVD. Quit any other applications that may launch to play the DVD.

4. Click the green "Start" button at the top of HandBrake window to rip the DVD to the Mac hard drive. Upon completion, a window will pop up that reads "Put down that cocktail . . . Your HandBrake queue is done!"

Brain Imaging Software

Researchers and clinicians use imaging software to analyze data from an MRI.

The most common brain imaging techniques are magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET). MRI is a better technique for imaging brain structures, whereas either technique can be used to image brain function. Many different companies sell brain imaging software for use with MRI or PET or both.

Imaging Software for Brain Structure

MRI scans provide excellent soft tissue contrast. Accordingly, researchers and clinicians commonly use this imaging modality to image the structure of the brain. The Mayo Clinic sells a software package called "Analyze" that allows researchers and clinicians to examine and analyze brain structural data from an MRI.

Imaging Software for Brain Function

MRI and PET imaging can be used to examine brain function. For example, a researcher or clinician can present a stimulus, such as an infusion of a drug or a video presentation of a movie, to a subject and determine which parts of the subject's brain are activated by that stimulus. The Wellcome Trust for Neuroimaging provides a statistical parametric mapping or SPM software package for analyzing functional PET or MRI data, at no charge. However, this package runs in a MATLAB environment, so a copy of MATLAB must be installed for it to run.

Imaging Software for Other Uses

Some brain imaging software can be used for other purposes. For example, MRI can be used to measure white matter tracks in the brain. These tracks convey information between different parts of the brain. Researchers and clinicians can use software provided free of charge by the University of Oxford Department of Clinical Neurology called FSL to analyze the integrity of these tracks and their paths.

Buy A Home Theater Screen

Selecting the right screen for you home theater or media center involves several factors that can affect your comfort level and your ability to enjoy the experience. Here are a few tips for selecting the home theater screen that is right for your home.

Instructions

1. Determine how far away from the screen your seating will be located. This can make a big difference in selecting the size of the screen, with closer equalling smaller and farther away equalling larger.

2. Determine the capabilities of your projector. A high definition projector 12 feet away from the screen can deliver a sharper image to a wider screen than a normal video or DLP projector.

3. Use black electrician's tape to mark out the size of the screen you think you might want on the wall where the screen is being installed. Sit in the area where you plan to set up your seats, and see if the viewing area is comfortable for you. Keep making changes until you're satisfied.

4. Check the screen's height, which can affect the viewing distance. The format of the screen--anamorphic (widescreen) or full screen can make a big difference in how close you have your seats.

5. Know your options. You can have a screen custom made and installed permanently on a wall, which is more expensive, or you can install a pull down screen that rolls up when not in use. Links to a couple of the more popular screen manufacturers are listed below in Resources.

Wire A Wallmounted Flat Screen

Hide the wires of your flat-screen by running them through the wall.

Mounting your flat-screen TV on the wall saves space by eliminating the hulking entertainment center while adding visual appeal to your living room. Hiding the wires on a wall-mounted flat-screen TV is a detail that completes the clean look of the TV display. The process consists of cutting two holes and feeding wires from one hole to another. The project uses common household tools and only takes 10 minutes.

Instructions

1. Measure and draw a 3-by-3-inch hole on the wall behind the wall-mounted TV. Make sure the hole is below the wall mount. You need enough room to fit your hands in the hole to complete the task and still conceal the hole from the TV viewers. Cut the hole out of the drywall with a carpenter's knife.

2. Measure and draw a 3-by-3-inch hole at the bottom of the wall where you have your TV's components, such as the cable box and DVD player. Cut this hole out of the drywall using the carpenter's knife.

3. Feed the wires from the top hole to the bottom hole. Connect the ends of the wires to their respective components, then connect the other ends of the cables to the TV.

Install Outside Motion Lights

A motion sensor light helps make your home more secure.

Motion detector lights are a great way to add an extra layer of security around your home. The motion sensor on the lights can detect infrared rays given off in the form of heat from people, pets and cars. Most outdoor motion lights have a photocell that turns the light off during daylight hours. Some lights provide low light at night until the motion sensor goes off. Other lights are dark until they detect motion. If you have basic electrical knowledge you can install outdoor motion lights around your home to add more security.

Instructions

1. Turn the power off to the exterior light fixtures on your home. Use a voltage tester to ensure that the power is truly off. Rub one lead against the white wire and the other lead against the ground wire of an existing exterior light. Repeat the process with the black wire. If the voltage tester shows that there's still electricity when either black or white wires are touched, find the right circuit breaker and turn it off.

2. Disconnect the old light fixture. Replace its mounting box if it isn't large enough for the new motion sensor light. Screw the new box into position on the exterior wall. Pull the wiring into the center of the box.

3. Connect the white wires from the house to the white wires on the light fixture. Next connect the black wires and finally connect the green or bare wires, which are the ground wires. Secure each connection tightly with wire nuts.

4. Set the light's seal around the edge of the mounting box. Put the light in place next to the seal. Secure it to the wall with screws. Run a bead of silicone caulk around the outside edge of the box to keep moisture out.

5. Point the motion detector at the range that you want it to cover. Aim the light bulbs where you want them to shine. You may have to make several adjustments to get both the detector and lights just the way you want them.

6. Adjust the motion light's distance range and set the time that you want the light to remain on. Turn the power back on to the light fixture and make sure that it's operating correctly.

Use Form 8829 For Business Use Of Your Home

Write off a portion of your mortgage or rent for a home office.

One of the benefits of a home-based business lies in the opportunity to deduct the cost of maintaining your home office on your federal tax return. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations permit you to deduct a portion of your rent or mortgage and your utility bills for your home office based on how much of your house is exclusively dedicated to business use. Use IRS Form 8829 to report and account for your home office expenses.

Instructions

1. Write the square footage of the space that you use for your business on line one of the form. You can calculate the square footage of the space by multiplying the width of the area in feet by the length of the area in feet. For example, if your business space is 15 feet in width and 12 feet in length, your square footage would be 180 square feet (15 times 12 equals 180).

2. Write the square footage of your entire home on line two of the form. If you don't know your home's square footage, you can estimate it by measuring the width of your entire home from the outside and the length of your entire home from the outside and multiplying those two numbers together. For example, if you live in house that measures 40 feet by 50 feet, your total square footage would be 2000 square feet (40 times 50 equals 2000).

3. Calculate the percentage of your home used for your business by dividing the square footage of your business space by the square footage of your entire home, and then multiplying the resulting number by 100. In our example, 180 square feet of business space divided by 2000 square feet of total living space would mean that nine percent of your home was dedicated to business use (180 divided 2000 equals .09 times100 equals 9 percent). Write the resulting percentage on line three of the form.

4. Transfer the number from line three of the form to line seven of the form, unless you operate a daycare business in your home that uses some of the home exclusively for business and other parts of the home for both business and personal purposes. In that case, see the Form 8829 instructions (see the Resources section) for details on make this calculation.

5. List the indicated household expenses on lines nine through 21 of the form, and then add all of those figures together and write the sum on line 22 of the form. Then multiply the number on line 22 by the percentage you calculated on line nine and enter the result on line 23. For example, if your total home expenses were $11,000 and the percentage of your home used for business was 9 percent, the deductible portion of your expenses would be $990 (11,000 times .09 equals 990).

6. Add your remaining business expenses as indicated on the form on lines 24 through 34, then calculate your final allowable deduction on line 35 by subtracting the amount on line 34 from the amount on line 33.

7. Calculate how much of the depreciation of your home can be deducted for your business in "Part III" of the form by completing lines 36 through 38, then multiplying the figure from line 38 by the percentage of your home dedicated to business as entered on line seven. Write the result on line 39. In our example, if the home depreciated by $3,000 and the deductible percentage was 9 percent, then $270 of the depreciation would be deductible for the business (3000 times .09 equals 270).

8. Indicate any disallowed expenses from the current year that may be carried over into the following year in "Part IV" of the form by following the instructions for your personal situation.

Homemade Camera Dolly

Homemade Camera Dolly

A camera dolly can be an essential part of video production. Whether it is for smoothing out a shot over rough terrain, making a camera move that is a bit more professional, or just quickly getting a camera in position for the next shot, the dolly will make the task much easier. A homemade camera dolly can be built to move about freely or to move along a fixed track.

Making A Track Dolly

Use PVC pipe, roller skate wheels and some other simple materials to construct a track dolly that will produce smooth and professional-looking shots, advises GoMediaMonkey.com.

Build your track first, using 1-inch pieces of PVC pipe. This is an easy process. Buy enough pipe to lay end to end so that you have an adequate length of track. Get large wooden dowels that are slightly smaller than the inside of the pipe, and then wrap the ends with packaging tape so that you can use the dowels as connectors between the segments of pipe. Lay the tracks aside.

Get two 3-foot-long steel V-rails, bent at 90-degree angles. Use rails with holes already in them, such as support rails for a garage-door opener. Attach in-line roller skate wheels on either side of the V-rail, and then bolt them to the underside of a wooden platform. The skate wheels grip the PVC pipe that forms the track, moving the camera smoothly.

Attach the V-rails to the bottom of a wooden platform. Use bolts to attach them on each side, parallel to one another. The rails should be mounted at the width you will be laying down your track. The platform should be strong enough to hold a person, tripod and camera. Two 3/4-inch pieces of hardwood, screwed together, is recommended for adequate support.

Place the tracks on the ground in straight lines parallel to one another, and line up the bottoms of the wheels with the rails, wedging the bottom edges of the wheels against the PVC track. The platform will roll smoothly, even with the added weight of the equipment and operator.

Quick-Rolling Alternative

To build a dolly that will quickly roll from one spot to another or will travel over extremely rough terrain, use a furniture dolly and a wooden platform.

The dolly is easily converted into a camera dolly if it is the type with a large flat area for moving large pieces of furniture or other loads. Simply place a strong piece of wood, such as the one used to make the platform in the track dolly, across the flat area of the existing dolly, and use that area to mount your tripod. This quick fix can serve the purpose in a pinch.

Install A Plasma Tv On Metal Studs

You can install your wall-mounted plasma TV into metal studs using toggle bolts. Toggle bolts will provide the strength necessary to hold your TV and maintain the integrity of the metal stud.

Mounting brackets for wall-mounted plasma TVs come in two pieces. One piece is separate and is mounted directly to the wall. Attached to the back of the television is the other part of the mounting bracket. How your two brackets join together depends on the manufacturer's specifications.

Instructions

1. Purchase toggle bolts to fit the screw holes in the television's mounting bracket. This part of the mounting bracket is the piece that is separate from the television and is installed directly onto the wall.

2. Use a stud finder to determine the location of the metal stud. Mark the center of the metal stud.

3. Place the mounting bracket against the wall. The holes in the mounting bracket should align with the center of the metal stud. Using a pencil, mark the location of the holes onto the wall.

The number of holes in your mounting bracket will depend on the manufacturer's specifications. Make a mark for each hole.

4. Drill through the wall and into the metal stud, making a drill hole for each mark. Each hole should be just large enough to fit a folded toggle bolt through it.

5. Separate the toggle from the bolt. Slide the bolt through the hole in the mounting bracket. Slide the toggle back onto the bolt on the backside of the mount--that is, the side that will face the wall. Place the toggle just on the end of the bolt. Repeat for each hole in the bracket.

6. Fold the wings of the toggles on each bolt, and insert into the drilled holes. The toggles and the ends of the bolts are inside the wall. Place the mounting bracket flush to the wall.

7. Using a screwdriver, tighten the bolts until the mounting bracket is secured to the wall.

8. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for joining the attached mounting bracket to the installed wall bracket.

What Is Iso Performance

Optimize your images.

ISO indicates the light sensitivity of film or the image sensor on a digital camera and is referred to as an ISO rating, setting or number. ISO performance is the ability to manipulate the ISO setting to minimize photo defects referred to as noise reduction.

Definition

ISO affects photo quality.

The ISO numbers commonly range from 100 to 3200. The lower the ISO number the less sensitive the image sensor is to light. Achieving better photo quality is often done by using a lower ISO number. ISO performance becomes an issue when taking photos in environments with dim lighting where flash is not permissible or desirable.

Alternatives

Utilize camera features.

Compensate for the low light to the sensor by adjusting the shutter speed, the aperture size (f-stop) or the ISO setting. Increasing the ISO speed is the most common method but it results in photo defects often referred to as noise or grain.

Technique

Achieve photo quality.

Increased ISO performance can be achieved by using the noise reduction feature of the camera, using a faster lens or by attaching a lens with a large aperture. Adjust the captured image using a photo editor. Options vary by manufacturer yet the most important indicators of ISO performance are experience and individual preference.

What Is An Apo Lens

What Is an APO Lens?

A lens focuses light by bending it. Each color of light bends by different amounts, creating a soft focus and a color fringe around objects. This color fringe is called chromatic aberration. Apochromatic (APO) lenses, are designed to reduce chromatic aberration.

The Speed of Light

When light travels from air through a lens, it slows down. This change of speed bends (or refracts) the light. Each color of light is refracted by a different amount, causing the various colors of light to focus at separate places. This is how a glass prism creates a spectrum.

Types of Glass

Glass can be made from ground flint, a mixture of soda and lime (crown glass), silica, dolomite, and other materials. Flint glass and crown glass are commonly used in optics. Fluorite and other extra-low dispersion materials are used in better quality lenses.

Simple Lenses

A simple lens, such as an eyeglass lens, is one piece of glass that is curved in order to bend light. Simple lenses may be convex or concave.

Chromatic Aberration

Simple lenses will focus the different colors of light at different spots, which creates an overall soft focus and color fringing that is most evident around high contract objects, such as the edge of a building against the sky. Chromatic aberration is undesirable.

Apochromatic Lenses

An apochromatic lens uses three pieces of glass to focus the three primary colors of light (red, green and blue) into focus at the same spot, which reduces or eliminates chromatic aberration and sharpens the image.

Uses of APO Lenses

Apochromatic lenses are widely used in photography, microscopy, and astronomy. They tend to be expensive because they contain more glass, and often the glass is of very high-quality or exotic materials.

Fda Medical Device Regulations

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates MRI machines.

The Food and Drug Administration regulates every medical device marketed and sold in the United States. Because of its regulatory role, the agency has its own center called the Center for Devices and Radiological Health. Medical device manufacturers must go through several steps in order to market and sell their products in the United States.

Registration

Any company, including foreign manufacturers, that wants to market and distribute medical devices in the United States must register with the FDA. The agency requires companies to register each year. Registration allows the FDA to better prepare and respond to public health emergencies by knowing where medical devices are made, according to the agency's website.

Listing

Any medical device manufacturer or distributor must list their devices in addition to registering their companies. The FDA provides a list of companies who must register their products on its website. These include: manufacturers, commercial distributors of the device, including contract manufacturers and sterilizers, those who repackage and re-label, specification developers, those who re-process single use devices, those who re-manufacture the device, those who manufacture accessories and components for the device which are sold directly to end users and U.S. manufacturers of export-only devices.

Premarket Approval or Notification

FDA regulations stipulate that medical devices be proved safe before they can be put on the market. The device must pass the FDA's pre-market approval test. Some devices are exempt from this requirement, including those which do not sustain human life, do not prevent any injury or damage to humans, or which will not cause great harm to humans. If manufacturers can show that their device is substantially equivalent to a similar apparatus on the market, the manufacturers do not need to gain pre-market approval. However, they still need to notify the FDA that their products are safe.

Quality Systems Regulation

Every U.S. manufacturer the FDA regulates must follow current good manufacturing processes. Because the agency also regulates medical device manufacturers, medical device factories are required to have current good manufacturing processes in place. A good manufacturing process would be ensuring that a work environment is sterile to prevent contaminating the device, for example. A wide range of medical devices exist, so the processes do not specify how a device must be produced. Rather, they assure that the device is manufactured at a certain standard and quality, and that medical devices will not harm patients. The FDA notes on its websites that manufacturers must develop processes which are relevant to the products they produce.

Labeling

Medical devices, as with any other FDA-regulated product, must be labeled properly before they can be marketed. Proper labeling, according to the FDA, means that any materials associated with the device, such as pamphlets, containers or other product information, must be accurate. It also must include the manufacturer's address. The FDA's labeling standards also require that manufacturers list other possible uses other than those intended. Medical device labeling also must contain instructions for the product's use. All labeling must be in English.

Remove Stuck Audio Tape From A Car Tape Deck

With the advent of the compact disc, cars with old-fashioned tape decks are few and far between. Those who cling to the original ways can still get plenty of use and enjoyment from their tapes, so long as things continue to function properly. When a tape gets stuck inside the tape deck, however, it can spell disaster for the deck and the cassette. It can be nearly impossible to remove a stuck tape without damaging the cassette. However, you may be able to get it out without completely ruining your car's tape player.

Instructions

1. Make sure the car is not running, and that the key is not in the ignition, so that no power is flowing to the tape deck. Using the flat, non-hooked end of the dental pick, pry the tape up from its position as much as you can; generally it will budge only a fraction of an inch.

2. Turn the pick around and use the hook to gently pull the cassette towards you, out of the machine. The tape that was stuck in the back of the deck should follow as you slowly pull the cassette forward.

3. Wind the tape back into the cassette using the eraser from a pencil.

Install Sirius Radio In A Case Tractor

Listen to satellite radio in the tractor.

Although most people think of satellite radio as a road-trip luxury, the fact is that satellite radio is used every day and by people in all walks of life. Even farmers and ranchers are putting satellite radio in tractors, ATVs and even skid-loaders for more options. Before installing the radio check local radio frequencies to make sure there is a frequency not in use; this way the satellite can play through the vehicle's existing radio.

Instructions

1. Attach the portable satellite radio mount to the tractor dashboard. Use the screws provided in the kit.

2. Decide if you will run the antenna wire through a window or door. Remember that every time a door or window is opened or closed it will compress the wire, which could cause reception problems.

3. Place the antenna on the roof of the tractor near the door or window where the wires will run. This will reduce reception problems because less wire will be used.

4. Attach the antenna wire to the satellite radio receiver. The wire, similar to the coaxial cables used with television, should reach easily to the radio but should not hang loosely over the roof or into the tractor cab.

5. Connect the 12-volt adapter, included with the kit, to the 12-volt plug in the tractor. The 12-volt plug is also the lighter plug.

6. Search for an open radio frequency on the existing radio. You want a station which is all static.

7. Set the radio frequency in the existing radio and set the same frequency in the menu of the satellite radio. This will allow the satellite to play through the existing speakers.

View Photo Negatives

Use a film scanner to view photo negatives on the computer.

Use a film scanner or your regular scanner to convert old film negatives to positive images that can be printed. In many ways, saving those negatives was a good decision, because scanning the film negative is getting a scan from the original image, whereas scanning a print is a second generation copy which is not as clear and defined as the original. Additionally film has a larger dpi (dots per inch) printing capability--as much as 3000 dpi--whereas a print may only have 300 dpi.

Instructions

1. Place the negative in the center of a photographer's light box and connect the box to the outlet. The center is the area that receives the least amount of shadowing and the most light, making it easier to see the negatives. Use a loupe, which is a magnifying lens that helps photographers see even the most minute of details. Viewing your negatives in this way will allow you to discard any pictures you may not want because of background, distortion, or damage.

2. Clean the negatives. Place color negatives in a solution of C-41 stabilizer and warm water. This solution can be found in any good camera store. Mix the solution according to the stabilizer directions. If you cant find C-41 stabilizer then use warm water and a drop of very mild soap. If they are black and white negatives, then use Kodak Photo Flo solution. Pull the negatives out of the solution and hang up to dry.

3. Place clean negatives in slide mounts. These are plastic containers for slides and can be found at your local photography shop or at websites like Gepe, 3D Stereo, or Frugal Photographer.

4. Place your slide mounts on your scanner and use the scanning software that came with your scanner. If you don’t have this type of software you can purchase and download a program for this at Silverfast or VueScan. Most scanners can scan negatives, however it is best to use a specialized film scanner because of the higher dpi (dots per inch) printing capability. Scan your images and save them in any folder you want on your computer.

5. Open the imaging software you use. If you don't have a software program like Photoshop or Photoshop elements, you can download free imaging software like Gimp or Paint. Open the scanned negatives files in the imaging software.

6. Convert the negative images to positive images by looking for the "Invert" command. In most imaging software, this will be on the toolbar under "Image," "Adjustments" and "Invert." Save the positive inverted images to files in any folder you choose so you won’t have to scan the images again.

7. Make color corrections by going to "Image," "Adjustments" and changing color hue and saturation or by adjusting the "Color Levels."

Buy Bnc Adapters

Bayonet Neill-Concelman connectors, or BNC connectors, are popular in pro-video and some audio applications. BNC connectors are for coaxial cable and can be found on video routers, amateur radio antenna connectors, electronic test equipment and more. Here are some things to look for when you buy BNC adapters.

Instructions

1. Learn the difference between the male and female BNC connectors. The difference between the male and female ends of BNC connectors is not as straight forward as other connectors and it is essential to know the difference when buying adapters. The male end is the larger end and has a coaxial pin in the middle. The female BNC connector has a hole in the center for the coaxial pin. The male BNC connector has the locking mechanism that connects to the female end.

2. Try a BNC to RCA adapter to use BNC only commercial video equipment on RCA consumer electronics. The adapter is affordable and it will make your life easier if you do lots of video work. The adapter should have a female BNC connector on one side and a male RCA on the other. You can also find male BNC to female RCA adapters, so be sure you know which you need.

3. Buy a BNC "T" adapter to split a signal using BNC connectors. You can find BNC "T" adapters that have 3 male ends, 3 female ends or a combination of male and female BNC connectors. You can also find right-angle BNC adapters that can make it easier to connect hard-to-reach BNC connectors.

4. Find BNC adapters for other connectors like banana plugs, N connectors, Motorola connectors and more.

5. Make sure you are getting a BNC adapter that is the right ohm rating for what you need. BNC connectors come in 50- and 75-ohm versions. It should say on the connector which ohm version it is. You can also check for dielectric material around the inside of the male end of the connector, which often designates a 50-ohm connector, whereas a lack of dielectric material signifies a 75-ohm connector.

Make A Flat Screen Entertainment Center

A flat-screen entertainment center relies upon the size and arrangement of the room as much as the TV and home theater equipment. Plan it properly and your entertainment center will make excellent use of its surroundings. Prepare poorly and you may end up with a TV that doesn't fit the place and a less-than-satisfying viewing experience. Before purchasing any equipment, examine the space for your entertainment center and decide which components will work best within it.

Instructions

1. Measure the wall space where you intend to put the flat screen TV. It should fit the dimensions precisely, with at least 6 inches of free space surrounding it--clear of pictures, windows or other distractions. If you intend to mount it on the wall, use a stud finder to locate the studs within your chosen space. They make the sturdiest locations for a mounting system. Check for potential glare from lights and windows, too. Sunlight from a window may reflect off the TV screen and mar your viewing experience.

2. Measure the distance between your intended screen and the spot where you intend to sit. For best viewing results, the distance should be 2 to 3 times the diagonal length of the screen. If space is limited and you have to sit closer, consider purchasing a smaller flat-screen TV.

3. Count the number of additional components your entertainment center will have: DVD players, A/V receivers, VCRs and speakers. Each component will need shelf space positioned close enough to the other components to run wiring between them. Plan for a few inches of extra shelf space for each component, to properly ventilate them and keep them from overheating. If you're using a single piece of furniture for all your components, make sure it can properly support the weight of them all and that there are access panels in the rear to let you run cables through without a great deal of hassle.

4. Determine the number of electrical outlets you will need and their distance from the planned home entertainment center. If it's farther from the center than the various plugs can stretch, use extension cords. Consider also whether you want to disguise the cords in some way to preserve the aesthetic value of the room. Group them in a tube, run them behind the furniture or get an electrician to run them through the walls.

5. Consider any other wiring needs you have. Rear speakers need to be wired to the rest of the entertainment center, as do subwoofers and projector systems. Map out the course of any required wiring, noting doorways or entryways they need to pass across and any potential tripping hazard. If possible, run them along the baseboard of the wall.

6. Plan any seating arrangements for your flat-screen entertainment center, whether it be specialized recliner seats or just a simple couch. Every viewing person in the household should have at least one seat set within a 30-degree angle of the center of the screen.

7. Assemble your components within the space you have prepared.

Make A Simple Pulley

A pulley is simply a single wheel, suspended from its axle, with a guide track for a rope or cable at the wheel's rim. The pulley described below can be used to lift light loads up to 20 lbs.

Instructions

Making the Pulley

1. Get an old wheel from a bicycle.

2. Remove the tire from the wheel.

3. Bend a coat hanger into a U shape that extends from the axle on one side of the wheel, around the outside of the wheel and to the other axle. The U should leave a 3-inch gap at the rim, and 4 inches of extra wire at each axle by which to attach it.

4. Use pliers to wrap the ends of the coat hanger tightly around the axles. Make sure the wheel is still able to spin.

5. Use the pliers to twist a loop into the gap of wire at the rim.

Hanging the Pulley

6. Select a strong beam, rafter or branch to hang the pulley from.

7. Attach the pulley to the beam by running a cord or rope around the beam and through the loop in the support wire.

8. Run a cord or rope around the rim of the wheel and underneath the support wire. This is the lifting rope, and it will need to be twice as long as the height you plan to lift.

9. Make sure the lifting rope can roll easily around the wheel without snagging on the support wire.

Using the Pulley

10. Tie the item to be lifted to one end of the lifting rope - this is the load side. Attach a bucket to the load side of the lifting rope for lifting small items.

11. Tie a knot in the lifting rope and secure before pulling.

12. Pull on the opposite end of the rope until the load reaches the desired height. Keep a firm grip on the lifting rope to avoid dropping the load.

What Do The Numbers On A Zoom Lens Mean

What Do the Numbers on a Zoom Lens Mean?

Zoom lenses can be attached to film and digital based single lens reflex (SLR) cameras. The barrel of the lens can tell you a host of information about the lens itself including its shooting capabilities, what size of filter can be attached, what focal lengths are available and maximum aperture settings.

Filters

Look for a circle with a line through it, followed by a number. This is the filter size of your lens. Common sizes range from 52 to 77.

Focal Lengths

Near the filter information will be numbers to indicate the focal range of the lens in millimeters. Some common zoom lens focal ranges are written as 17-35mm, 35-135mm and 70-200mm. The focal lengths available will also be written in increments on the barrel of the lens, near the zoom ring.

Aperture

After the focal range, will be a set of numbers indicating the largest aperture settings for that specific focal range. It will be written like 1:2.8-4. In this example, the largest aperture setting, on the wide end of the zoom lens, is 2.8. When the lens is zoomed to the longest focal length, the widest aperture available is 4.

Distance

Most lenses show a range of distances, measured in both feet and meters, on the barrel of the lens. This is used to estimate the distance from the camera to the subject when manually focusing the lens.

Extra Features

Some brands of camera lenses offer extra quiet focusing mechanisms and vibration reduction features, which are indicated on the barrel of the lens. Look for wording such as "silent wave motor," ultrasonic, USM (ultrasonic motor) and VR (vibration reduction).

Installing and setting up Bluetooth on a Cingular cell phone will allow you to use a wireless Bluetooth headset. The ability to talk on your cell phone without having to hold anything can come in handy, especially when you are driving. Installing Bluetooth will also make your Cingular cell phone "visible" to other Bluetooth devices that are close to your cell phone. Setting up Bluetooth on a Cingular cell phone is a process that takes just a few minutes.

Instructions

1. Plug your Bluetooth headset in to charge the device.

2. Turn the device on and put it into "Pairing Mode." To do this, press and hold the button in the middle of the device until the light on the device remains on.

3. Turn your Cingular cell phone on and go to "Menu."

4. Select "Settings" and then "Connectivity."

5. Choose the "Bluetooth" option. On the Bluetooth page, you will need to choose "Bluetooth" and then select "On." Doing so will make your Bluetooth connection active.

6. Select the "Paired devices" choice back on the Bluetooth page of the Cingular phone. On the next page, you will need to choose the "New" option. The device from step two will be listed on the phone.

100400 Mm Vs 400 Mm Lens

A high-powered zoom lens has both advantages and disadvantages.

The choice here is between a fixed focal length lens and a zoom lens. In this case, the telephoto lens has a focal length of 400 millimeters, while the zoom lens can be adjusted from a focal length of 100 millimeters to one of 400 millimeters or anywhere in between. Each lens has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Variable Focal Length

The zoom lens is adjustable in its focal length. This eliminates the need for changing the lens, if you want to change from a super telephoto (400 mm) to a minimal telephoto (100 mm). With a zoom lens mounted on your camera, all you need to do is change the lens adjustment. Each lens has its own specific use, so it is a great convenience to be able to switch from one focal length to another just by moving the zoom-adjustment ring.

Fewer Moving Parts

The 400 mm lens has fewer moving parts, so there is a good chance that it will last much longer and with less repairs than the zoom lens. For every time you change focal lengths with a zoom, the main lens moves in or out from the body of the camera, a condition that is made possible by a complex arrangement of camera parts.

Larger Aperture

Fixed-length lenses are usually made with a wider aperture for the lens than their zoom counterparts. For a zoom lens to have the same possible lens opening as a fixed focal length lens, the lens construction would be an expensive undertaking. With wide-angle lenses, lens apertures are not a major problem, but when using a long-length telephoto, the photographer needs every bit of available light that is possible, especially if he or she wishes to avoid mounting the camera and lens combination on a tripod.

Less Expensive

The price of a 400 mm fixed-length lens is considerably less than that for the same zoom lens. The construction of zoom lenses is a complex undertaking for the camera manufacturer, especially as the focal length increases and the lens becomes bigger and heavier.

Less Time to Focus

When using a zoom lens, a photographer can get wrapped up in trying to find the right adjustment with the focal length. Even after he or she does come up with the correct setting for that variable, there still is the focus adjustment and the calculation of the shutter speed and/or lens aperture. It is quite possible that during the time that is spent adjusting all the settings that the subject matter may have moved. Considering that high-range telephotos are often used to photograph wildlife, this is an important item to consider.

Lens Sharpness

Sometimes the images made with a fixed-position lens are sharper than those created with a zoom. The lens quality of zooms is improving, but you may have to pay top dollar to get the best quality image from a zoom lens.

Use Wired Lavalier Microphones

A Lavalier microphone is a small audio device that typically clips to a person's clothing for hands-free audio recording or broadcasting. Lavaliers are commonly used by television reporters when conducting interviews, or when someone needs to move around freely without holding a microphone. Lavaliers are available in wired and wireless models. A wired Lavalier can usually be set up faster since the mic plugs directly into the audio equipment and there is no need to test a wireless transmission.

Instructions

1. Run the Lavalier microphone and its attached cable up the shirt sleeve of the person wearing the mic. Pull the end of the microphone out through the individual's blouse or shirt, either between two buttons or at the neck opening.

2. Attach a Lavalier clip to the clothing near the microphone. Squeeze to open the clip and slide it onto the fabric, then release.

3. Bend the microphone wire into a short loop facing downward about two inches. Push the loop into the two clips that hold the microphone wires. When you are finished, the Lavalier microphone should be pointing toward the user's chin, with the loop hanging below. When you clip the wire in a loop, it helps reduce noise caused by the vibrating wire if the person must move around while speaking.

4. Connect the plug on the other end of the microphone wire to the audio jack on your recording or broadcasting equipment.

5. Adjust the volume and gain controls on the audio equipment to test the sound level of the person's voice before starting the recording or broadcast.
