Top 10 Trail Cameras

A trail camera captures images of game day or night, up to around 100 feet away.

A trail camera is a weatherproof device consisting of a camera, motion detector, and flash. Trail cameras attach to trees in hunting grounds where wild game live, and are used to monitor animal travel patterns so hunters know where and when to hunt. The best trail cameras combine wide motion detection ranges with fast triggers and powerful features.

Reconyx RM45

This camera sports a 1/10-second trigger time (the time between detection and image capture), making it one of the fastest cameras on the list. Because detection zone nearly matches the camera's field of the view, tests show that the camera can capture a subject almost the instant it enters the frame. Its consistency at distances up to 80 feet make it one of the best trail cameras available.

Spypoint Pro-X

In the TrailCamPro.com Shootout (a side-by-side performance comparison), the Spypoint Pro-X came in second place, beating out other established cameras. Fifty feet seems to be its best range, capturing the most images with its fast trigger speed and generous detection zone.

Scoutguard SG550

This might be a tough camera to get your hands on, but it could be the right camera for you. The camera's sweet spot - the range in which it captured the most images - is in the 20-to-50 foot range.

Bushnell Trophy Cam

The Trophy Cam has a shorter detection range than many cameras, but what it lacks in distance, it makes up for in detection zone width and pricetag. Trigger time is marginal at just over 1 second, but it has a battery life of 4-to-6 months.

Leaf River IR-7SS

This camera boasts a 1.5-second trigger time, good for a camera in this price range. Lots of buttons and features make the camera confusing, but it comes with a helpful instruction manual. The camera uses seven megapixels for big, clear images, and it has a wide detection zone.

Wildview Extreme 5

The Wildview Extreme 5 has a slow trigger time of 4 seconds, but makes up for that with a wide detection zone. It's most effective in the 20-to-50-foot range.

Predator Xtinction

This camera features an invisible flash with a 30-foot range, or a visible infrared flash that extends the range to 40 feet. The camera boasts a fast 1/2-second trigger and five-image-per-trigger burst mode.

Stealth Cam Sniper

This camera performed admirably at 40 feet, capturing 6 images per trigger, but performance dropped off at longer distances. At five megapixels, images are less crisp than other cameras. Video resolution tops out at 540-by-480 pixels, which is nearly standard definition video.

Cuddeback Capture

On the value end of the spectrum, the Cuddeback Capture fits the bill. Working at distances up to 40 feet, the Capture has a narrow detection zone with a fast trigger.

Moultrie I45

Time, temperature, moon phase, date, and photo ID information marked on every frame make this camera an eye-catcher. The infrared LED flash is virtually invisible, and improvements to the SD memory card slot make this camera a bargain.

Polaroid Lcd Tv Problems

Polaroid LCD TV Problems

LCD TVs can be entertaining, but it's important to know the downfalls of some models. Polaroid LCD TVs have several very serious functionality and safety issues including loss of picture and sound, and even risk of fire.

Sound Problems

The sound quality with Polaroid's LCD TVs is not great, and in some cases manufacturing problems lead to complete loss of sound. LCD TVs' built-in speakers tend to not be great, but Polaroid models have received a notably high volume of consumer complaints in regard to sound issues (Reference 1).

Fire Hazard

More alarming is the potential fire hazard associated with some Polaroid models. The TDA-03211C model has had numerous issues with overheating. Many such models manufactured between 2007 and 2009 sold by Wal-Mart actually have false safety standard logos and questionable parts and construction (Reference 2). There have been reports of smoke coming from these TVs, and at least one report of a TDA-03211C catching fire.

Picture loss

The most common consumer complaint about Polaroid LCDs, especially the TDA-03211C, is related to picture loss. Often, the picture loss is tied to other problems. Several reports refer to a loud noise, followed by complete loss of picture and sound. Some models have problems with banding and a black screen with sound but no picture.

Guide To The Canon Rebel Xti Digital Camera

The Canon Rebel XTi is a powerful consumer-level single-lens reflex (SLR) camera that offers the amateur photographer an excellent way to learn more about photography. With a 10 megapixel sensor and the ability to shoot three frames per second at shutter speeds as fast as 1/4000 of a second, the XTi can handle action photography, landscapes and portraits.

Getting Started

The XTi comes with a rechargeable lithium ion battery. After charging the battery, open the battery card door on the bottom and slide it in. The XTi uses Compact Flash memory cards; load one in the memory card slot, attach the neck strap to the camera and then attach a lens. The XTi can use a variety of Canon lenses and usually comes with an 18-55 mm wide-angle lens. Line up the dot on the lens (either red or white, depending on the lens), with the dot on the camera body, push the lens in and turn it to the right to lock the lens in place.

Exposure Modes

The XTi has several automatic modes that optimize the settings of the camera for certain scenes, including Portrait, Landscape, Macro, Action/Sports and Night Portrait. These modes allow the photographer to tell the camera what she is shooting to help get the best picture. These modes are much better than a basic automatic mode because the camera has more information about the type of scene and can set aperture and shutter for the best results.

Advanced Features

The XTi has advanced shooting modes, including Program, Aperture, Shutter and Manual. In Program, the photographer sets the ISO and White Balance, while the camera sets aperture and shutter. ISO is a measure of the sensitivity of the sensor to light; higher ISO settings increase light sensitivity, enabling better shots in darker conditions. White balance is a measure of how the camera sees the color white, enabling better color accuracy. Aperture controls how open the lens is and also controls depth of field in the shot or how much of the image is in focus from front to back. Higher Aperture settings close down the lens and result in more depth of focus. Shutter speeds are used to stop motion; higher shutter speeds are used for faster scenes. In full Manual mode, the photographer can control all four of these factors to get the shot he wants.

The Difference Between A Compact Flash & An Sd Card

The Difference Between a Compact Flash & an SD Card

Compact Flash and Secure Digital are two popular types of digital memory cards currently available in the consumer electronics market. Both are versatile yet affordable memory solutions for many different electronic products.

Memory Capacity

Compact Flash memory cards most commonly run from 1GB of memory capacity to a high end of 16GB. Secure Digital cards run a bit higher--up to 32GB.

Speed

While Secure Digital cards have higher capacity, Compact Flash cards have a much faster data transfer speed. SD cards are capable of moving up to 20MB of data per second, while CF cards can transfer a significantly higher 45MB per second.

Uses

Due to their large storage capacity, SD cards are most commonly used in MP3 players to store high-quality music files. Compact Flash cards are preferred by photographers due to their memory speed; this memory allows for fast capturing and storage of photos.

Memory Card Dimensions

SD cards are physically very small and compact, measuring in at 32-by-24-by-2.1 mm. Compact Flash cards are significantly larger, and vary in size depending on the memory type. Generally, they measure around 36-by-42 mm and range in thickness from 3 to 5 mm.

Price Range

The price range for both Compact Flash and Secure Digital cards is very wide. Factors such as memory speed and capacity dramatically affect the pricing of the card. SD cards can be found from as low as $5 for a 1GB card, to well over $100 for high-capacity cards that are 16GB and up. Compact Flash is similarly cheap on the low end. The most expensive, professional-grade, high capacity CF cards, however, are dramatically more expensive--in the $300 range.

Hack An Iphone Jack

Adding additional accessories to your iPhone may seem like something only computer wizards can do, but it is a straight forward process. Installer.app is a third party application software that allows you to "jailbreak" your phone by adding additional accessories to your phone that otherwise did not come with the original installation. Jailbreaking your phone allows you access to the iPhone's file system through your computer.

Instructions

1. Download iBrick software if you have a Windows platform iPhone. Installer.app is the only software available for Mac. After you download iBrick, install just one application: Installer.app.

2. Know the firmware version that is on your phone before downloading Installer.app, because it asks before the installation. If you don't know the firmware version of your iPhone, you can locate it under "Settings, General, About" then "Version" on your iPhone. After downloading, you should see the "Installer" icon on your iPhone homepage.

3. Initiate Installer.app, and afterwards a small list of third party applications appear ready to launch from Nullriver repository. To increase the list of applications available, install the Community Sources package.

4. Click the package/application you choose to install, press the install button on the right and choose "Yes." Installer.app continues to download it on your iPhone. After the new application has been installed, your iPhone restarts. Don't worry, this is a part of the process. Choose An Slr Camera Lens

Looking through the tube

A single lens reflex (SLR) camera allows you to be more creative than a regular point-and-shoot because of the lenses out there that you can use to further control your creative composition. Lenses open up possibilities with your SLR, and because of this, a lot lenses cost even more than the camera body itself. Buying an SLR camera lens is an expensive venture, so you must choose wisely.

Instructions

1. Identify your needs as well as camera compatibility. Lenses cannot be exchanged between camera brands (and sometimes even models), so invest in a lens compatible with the camera you are primarily using. Identify the lens mount of your camera and this will help you what kind of lens to look for. Reconcile your artistic and financial priorities.

2. Learn more about the lenses' features. Not all lenses are made equal. Focal length and aperture are some of the critical things to consider when buying a lens for your needs. Some lenses have more features, and some are made to be used solely with your camera model. Manufacturers advise you to buy lenses made specifically for your camera, to avoid any compatibility issues. Other lenses have extensive features such as image stabilization and silent autofocus, to name a few. Keep in mind that the more features the lens has, the higher the price will be. Typical lenses with special features can go up to $5,000 and above.

3. Compare prices between retailers and online stores. Prices range widely between brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers. Some stores like BestBuy and Fry's Electronics have websites where they post discounts regularly. Be sure to check the credibility of the online retailer before you buy, especially on auction websites like eBay. Request the lens to come in the original box with the proof of purchase.

4. Consider the maintenance for the lens. The lens you are looking to buy may require you to buy additional accessories such as a bigger camera bag, a mount adapter and special lens cleaner. It is also important to learn about camera and lens care. Check with your manufacturer if they support customers with lens maintenance. Cnet and Dpreview.com offers consumer reviews of lenses, which will help you to know what manufacturers offer quality products and care for these products.

Fix An Xd Card Error

XD cards are memory cards that are mostly used in digital cameras. Users can store photos on these cameras and then use the XD cards to transfer the pictures to a computer. There may come a time when a "XD Card Error" message appears on the screen of your digital camera after you turn it on. This can be very frustrating, especially if you have a large amount of pictures saved on the XD card.

Instructions

1. Stop adding files to the XD card as soon as you notice the "XD Card Error" message. Putting more photos or other files on your XD card may further corrupt the card and keep you from retrieving the files that are already saved on it.

2. Remove the XD card from the device and blow on it. Once you've done this, re-insert the XD card into the device. If you still get the "XD Card Error" message, you can move to Step 4. Otherwise, go on to Step 3.

3. Put the XD card into a different device. When you do this, the memory card may actually repair itself while in the device. Try placing the XD card into one or two different cameras or other devices. If the XD card works in one of the other devices, place the card back into the original device. If you still receive an error, the problem could be with the device and not the XD card.

4. Purchase and use an XD card reader. These devices plug directly into your computer and allow you to extract any files saved on the XD card. This may not completely fix your XD card error, but it's a good idea to save these files on your computer before you attempt any other steps.

5. Format the XD card. Formatting the card will restore it to the factory settings and allow you to start from scratch. Most XD cards can be formatted either in an electronic device (such as a digital camera) or on a computer. Read the manual for your particular XD card to find specific instructions for formatting it.

Use A Caulking Gun

Caulking is the easiest way to seal against air and water. Use caulk to fill cracks between wood trim and your walls, inside the house and outside.

Instructions

1. Clean the area to be caulked, removing dirt, loose paint and old caulk.

2. Be sure the area is dry before you begin.

3. Load a tube of caulk into a caulking gun, making sure it's well seated at both ends.

4. Use a utility knife to cut the tip of the spout. Cut off as little as possible, taking into consideration the size of the 'bead' of caulk you need. Some people like to cut the spout at an angle, while others cut it straight; it doesn't make a big difference.

5. If using caulk that comes in a cardboard tube, look for a second seal at the base of the spout. Insert a nail or awl through the spout to puncture the seal. Many caulking guns come with such a puncturing device. (Plastic tubes usually don't have a second, inner seal.)

6. Hold the gun at a slight angle. If you're filling a crack, insert the spout if you can; otherwise, run it at the surface.

7. Pull away from the bead slightly as you squeeze out the caulk, rather than push into it, which can be very messy.

8. Use just enough caulk to do the job. (Experiment in an out-of-the-way area. You may find that you'll need less of a bead than you think.)

9. Use your finger to gently press the caulk into the corner or crack.

10. Use a damp towel or rag to clean off most of the excess caulk, then use a dry one to clean off the rest.

Different Surveillance Cameras

Surveillance cameras come in many forms and sizes, are wired or wireless, and some even have features such as motion detectors. They can be set up in public places or in the privacy of a home.

Traffic Safety Surveillance Cameras

Next time you drive through an intersection, look up to see whether a camera is mounted on the traffic light pole. These traffic safety surveillance cameras are there to give operators and emergency units a visual of traffic congestion and vehicle accidents. Some are even mounted to take a picture of a car's license plate if they run a red light.

Home Surveillance Cameras

People use home surveillance cameras to not only protect themselves from intruders, but also to monitor what is going on inside the house. Outside cameras sometimes have night vision and are known as motion sensor cameras, which use infrared energy. The camera will use the difference in a infrared light pattern to trigger an alarm or a floodlight. Infrared energy will detect any movement within its view and activate. Night vision cameras use the same monitors that motion sensor cameras use, except it uses infrared emissions, which puts together a high resolution image. Even if it is in pitch dark, the image will be revealed. Cameras on the inside of the house can be made so small that they can stick on the side of stuffed animal toys or be placed on shelves between objects. These are sometimes used to monitor a nanny or babysitter.

Other Features of Home Surveillance Cameras

All home surveillance camera systems come with numerous cameras, usually somewhere between eight and 32. They will additionally come with a DVR recording unit that allows each camera angle to be recorded on a hard disk. This allows the owner to have a long recording time and the ability to look at previously recorded images.

Fake Cameras

The most inexpensive way to put up a surveillance system on your property or business is by installing fake video surveillance cameras. They are designed to trick people into thinking they are being recorded.

Wireless Video Cameras

Wireless video surveillance cameras have become one of the most common forms of cameras because they are convenient to use in your home or office. Cameras can be positioned easily. They are powered by batteries and then inserted with a video receiver that will send a live feed back to your television, VCR or computer.

Nikon D200 Instructions

Nikon D200

The Nikon D200 is a professional-quality digital SLR designed to be used by serious photographers out in the field. The camera has a durable magnesium alloy body and takes pictures at a 10.2-megapixel resolution. If you've recently purchased a Nikon D200, taking high-quality pictures is relatively easy and will probably only take you a few minutes to pick up.

Memory Card

Insert a Compact Flash memory card in the slot on the right side of the camera. All of the pictures you take on the Nikon D200 will be saved to this card. Try to purchase a Compact Flash card that is relatively large in size so you don't have to switch out memory cards during a photo shoot and risk losing a card full of pictures. With a 10-megapixel camera you will more than likely want to select a 4GB card (capable of holding 1,300 high-resolution pictures) or an 8GB card (capable of holding 2,600 high-resolution pictures). If you think you might take pictures using the camera's continuous mode you also want to purchase a "high speed" memory card. High speed cards read and write data faster, making it possible to take more pictures in rapid succession than you can with a traditional card.

Adjust the ISO

Adjust the ISO setting in the camera for the particular lighting situation you're in. The ISO setting determines how sensitive the camera's sensor is to light. Typically, you want to use a high ISO setting for bright situations and a low ISO setting for darker ones. The ISO in the Nikon D200 can be adjusted from 100 to 1600, giving you a good deal of flexibility. You can access the ISO menu from the button labeled "ISO" on the top of the camera.

Experiment with Focus

Use the switch of the back of the camera to switch between autofocus (AF) and manual focus (MF). To use the autofocus, hold the shutter button down halfway to allow the camera to focus. Once your subject is in focus press the shutter button the remainder of the way to take a picture. With manual focus, use the ring on the outermost part of your cameras lens to adjust the focus in your picture.

Install A Lens Filter

Adding a filter to your lens can change the look of your images.

Camera lenses come in a variety of shapes and sizes, all of which can be modified by employing filters. A filter can change the way the light enters through the lens by making it darker or giving it a blue tint, for example. You can install a lens filter in less than a minute to create these, and many other, effects.

Instructions

1. Remove the lens cap. Spray the end of the lens with the air spray, then clean the lens surface with a microfiber towel if any remaining dirt or grime is present.

2. Take the lens filter out of its case. Clean both sides of the filter using the air spray and the microfiber towel if necessary.

3. Hold the lens filter by the sides with the threaded end towards the lens. Screw the lens filter onto the lens by twisting it clockwise on the lens itself, making sure to touch only the sides of the filter to avoid getting it dirty. Stop turning the lens once it can't twist any further. Reinstall the lens cap until you're ready to shoot.

Directions For Xm Roady

Though it's an older model, the Delphi XM Roady is a versatile, plug-and-play XM receiver that can be set up in both the home and car. When properly set up, the Roady will allow you to listen to XM radio pretty much anywhere you want.

Antenna Setup

Out of the box, the Roady comes with hardware designated for vehicle use. You'll find a 12-volt adapter, cassette audio adapter, antenna and mounting hardware. Install the antenna onto the middle of your vehicle's roof. It should be 6 inches from any window or sunroof. You can also mount the antenna onto the trunk, if you do not have a metallic roof surface (i.e. soft top). Clean the surface of the roof and mount the magnetic antenna. Run the antenna wire along the door, trunk or window frame and into the vehicle. The antenna should not obstruct your vision or control of the vehicle in any way and should be out of the way of those entering the vehicle. One good place to run it is along the top or bottom inside weather stripping of the door frame to the dash and to the location of the receiver. Avoid bending or crimping the cable.

Receiver Mounting

Locate a clear, hard mounting surface on your vehicle where you can have easy access to the controls of your Roady. Make sure that all required cables can reach the unit and that it doesn't impede your airbags, your vision or your ability to reach vehicle controls. Clean off the area with the included cleaning kit, rubbing it down in one direction. Dry it off with a cloth and repeat the cleaning, allowing it to air dry afterward. The surface should be 60 degrees F or above when mounting. Heat up the included adhesive mounting pad using a hair dryer or vehicle heater. Pull the paper off the back and firmly apply the adhesive to your clean mounting location. For best results, allow 72 hours to let it fully bond. Then snap the Roady onto the mount.

Connections

Install the 12-volt power adapter into the power port on the top left side of your Roady and into your 12-volt socket in your vehicle. Plug the antenna cable into the antenna jack on the bottom left. You can connect the Roady to your vehicle's stereo in several ways. The kit comes with a cassette adapter, in which you'll plug the tape into the cassette deck and connect the cable to your Roady's audio output. Alternately, if your stereo has an auxiliary input, you can connect the audio output on the Roady to the auxiliary input on your vehicle. The audio output is between the antenna and power jacks. If your vehicle is equipped with neither option, a separate FM modulator can be purchased and installed to tap into your FM antenna.

Activation

Turn the Roady on and tune into channel 1--this channel is a preview station and should work regardless of whether your unit is activated. Turn to channel 0 and record the eight-digit ID number. With your ID number and credit card, contact XM at (800) 852-9696 to activate your account. You can also activate online by following the link below. Keep the Roady on for an hour after activation to ensure that your unit is properly integrated into the system. Familiarize yourself with the controls and enjoy your new XM subscription.

Home Setup

To set-up your Roady at home, you can purchase a home kit for the unit that will include a dock, antenna, power adapter and audio connections to integrate it into your home stereo system. You can also purchase XM docks, if you don't have a stereo system. The antenna should be set up in a window with a clear view of the south sky.

Use Nimh Batteries

Eveready NiMH Rechargable AA Cell

Since their introduction to the consumer market in 1989, nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries have carved a niche in powering everything from electronic devices to electric vehicles. Older rechargeable dry cell technologies were limited by "memory effect," in which they do not recharge completely without being fully discharged. NiMH cells have no memory effect and can be fully recharged hundreds of times from any state of discharge. However, they do have a few practical limitations. Follow this guideline to learn where to use NiMH batteries to your best advantage and when it's better to use a different battery.

Instructions

1. Use NiMH cells to power any high drain device, such as digital cameras, radios and telephones. Frequency of recharging will not affect the battery's output.

2. Avoid using NiMH batteries in low demand or infrequently used devices that have no built-in charger, such as flashlights, remote controls or smoke detectors. NiMH cells have a self-discharge rate of as much as 1 percent per day, so using a conventional or alkaline battery, or a NiCad rechargeable is a better choice in seldom-used electronics.

3. Check the power requirements of devices using 9 Volt (PP3) batteries before choosing a NiMH to power it. NiMH PP3 batteries may have six, seven or eight cells and vary in voltage from 7.2 to 9.6.

4. Recharge NiMH cells as soon at the first sign they need charging. If the cells are arranged in series and one cell fully discharges before the rest, the other cells can drive the dead one's chemical reaction in reverse and cause irreversible damage.

5. Use a charger designed for NiMH cells or batteries for recharging. These chargers monitor the batteries' voltage and prevent over- and under-charging.

6. Dispose of NiMH batteries in your household trash, and take them to a recycling center. They're considered environmentally friendly, but some components can be reused.

Diy Diffuser

When taking pictures with direct light--either via camera flash or stand alone studio lights--you'll frequently find the light in your photos is quite harsh. Direct light creates bright glare on shiny subjects, and it creates dark, harsh shadows as well. This is particularly displeasing for people photos, but these problems can be fixed with any photography subject by using a diffuser. Photo diffusers help spread and soften the light, and there are several ways to make your own for little to no cost. Here are two approaches.

Flash Diffuser

The built in flash on a camera is notorious for creating very dark, harsh shadows, causing bright glare on shiny faces or surfaces, and creating red-eye in people's pictures. Resolving this issues is as simple as using a flash diffuser to help spread and soften the light thrown out from the flash.

To create your own flash diffuser, you'll need a small cardboard box, some tape and some diffusing material such as tissue paper or lightweight fabric.

The cardboard box you use needs to be slightly larger and taller than your on camera flash so that it can be fit down over the top of it. If you don't have a small enough box, make a rectangular one yourself by cutting rectangular pieces of cardboard and taping them together at the size you need.

Cut a hole in one of the smaller sides of your box that is just large enough to fit snugly over your camera's flash head. Next, cut a hole in one of the longer sides--high enough up to match where your camera flash bulb is--leaving some of the box intact underneath this hole to provide strength in the diffuser.

Be sure to create the front hole long and wide enough to not block the camera flash when it fires.

Tape, glue or staple your paper or cloth diffusing material over the front hole and you're finished. To use this diffuser, simply sit it down over top of the flash on your camera, with the diffuser material side facing front.

Frame Diffuser

Making a photo diffuser to use with standard lamps, bulbs or studio lights is very simple to do as well. You can also make this design with cardboard, or use an empty photo frame for more durable results.

Picture frames work well for making small photo diffusers, but they may be too heavy or bulky for creating large ones.

To make a picture frame diffuser, simply find or buy a picture frame and remove the glass and backing. Lay fabric such as white satin across the frame and start taping or glueing it into place. Pull the fabric taut as you glue it to the frame to prevent wrinkles and sagging.

To make this diffuser with cardboard simply cut a window out of a piece of cardboard for an instant frame, or cut strips of cardboard 1 to 2 inches wide and tape, glue or staple them together into a frame shape. Spread thin tissue paper or wax paper over the frame, and pull it flat as you tape, staple or glue it into place against the frame.

Cctv Surveillance Techniques

Choosing the right camera locations is essential to effective surveillance.

Closed circuit television, or CCTV, is one of the most prolific and effective methods of security and surveillance. Cameras positioned around homes, offices, outdoor areas and public venues have been in use for a long time as a way to monitor property, people and locations. These factors that should be taken into account when choosing which surveillance techniques best suit your needs.

Cameras

Camera technology has evolved significantly in recent years, but the established, externally mounted camera housing is still a popular choice for CCTV surveillance techniques. The larger camera housings offer weatherproof protection for your CCTV cameras, and extra room for elements such as infrared floodlights for night vision, heated lenses to prevent misting, and protection against vandalism. Visible CCTV cameras also provide a clear deterrent, emphasizing that a particular area is under surveillance. Because of this, mounting an empty camera housing can provide a similar level of security at considerably less cost.

Covert Cameras

The progress made in the miniaturization of CCTV camera technology has made it possible to install surveillance equipment in many covert locations. Pin-hole cameras require only a very small aperture to obtain an image, allowing you to place hidden cameras in inconspicuous locations such as wall clocks, office equipment, ornaments and any object that attracts people's attention and thereby providing a clear image of their face. Covert cameras can even be installed within clothing and accessories for remote surveillance.

Monitoring

Capturing an image from a camera is only one part of an effective surveillance strategy. The image must be displayed somewhere so the areas under surveillance can be monitored. Security monitors accept a direct input from a camera, or you can employ a video switcher to accept multiple camera inputs to be displayed on a single monitor or a bank of monitors. Devices called modulators can be used to adjust a camera's transmission frequency to allow it to be viewed on a standard TV set. Many TVs have a composite video connection, which can also be used to accept a direct feed from a CCTV camera.

Recording

Time-lapse video recorders are used to capture surveillance footage from cameras or camera switchers for extended periods of time. By only capturing a few frames per second, a time-lapse recorder can make a single tape last up to a week before it needs changing. Digital recording methods are also available, which capture CCTV feeds directly to a computer, hard drive or flash memory. Many time-lapse recording devices include motion detection technology, and only record a feed when movement is detected on the camera's image. This can further extend recording times and avoids filling recording media with static CCTV images.

The Best Vacations In The U S For A Family

The Best Vacations in the U.S. for a Family

Everyone remembers that great family vacation--the vacation that continues to evoke memories year after year, the vacation that was full of discovery, the vacation that bonded the entire family. But what are the ingredients of such a trip, and how do you determine where to go and what to do? Participation and careful planning by the entire family is the key.

Planning

Above all, vacations should be fun for the whole family and not focus on any one family member. What do the kids enjoy? Are they close in age? Can adults and kids participate (and have fun) with the same activity? What will stimulate everyone? Here are a few ideas.

A Resort Vacation

Probably the most popular family venue is the resort vacation--and for good reason. Resorts offer a variety of activities, and most are designed to appeal to all ages. A typical example is Disney World in Orlando, Florida, where the theme park can be combined with education (EPCOT Center), movie-making (Universal Studios) and outdoor activities like swimming. Sea World, the Kennedy Space Center and ocean beaches are all nearby. Similar resorts include the Wisconsin Dells water park near Madison, and Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

The Heritage Vacation

For a family with older children, consider an educational heritage vacation. Washington, D.C., tops the list of possibilities, and its free museums can tantalize and educate at the same time. The popular Smithsonian Air and Space museum is home to actual spacecraft, with mind-challenging exhibits. The Capitol, White House and memorials evoke a strong sense of national significance and pride for all family members. Similar spots for heritage vacations include Boston, Williamsburg, Virginia, and the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.

The Adventure Vacation

For true family bonding, try an adventure vacation. These can include a simple stay in a national park or an elaborate week at a dude ranch. Horseback riding, hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting--all are possibilities, and each can be enjoyed by an entire family. Adventure vacations include trips to national parks like Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain, Grand Canyon and Great Smokey, but can also include local parks and preserves.

The Stay-at-Home Vacation

Don't overlook the "home" vacation. While it may not sound exotic, local attractions should not be underestimated and can offer a great family experience. Choose a local museum one day, a sports outing the next, and a lake, beach or amusement park after that. Top off each day with a picnic or dinner at a special restaurant. Sometimes we tend to overlook the local highlights.

Rotate An Image With Javascript

Rotating an image on a web page with Javascript is relatively easy. You need to be familiar with HTML, so you know what you're looking at when you edit the web page code to rotate the image, but if you use a web page editing tool capable of auto-generating Javascript for rollover images, you don't need to write any Javascript yourself to make this work.

Instructions

1. Open your web page editing software and create a new page or pull up the page you want to add the rotating image to and insert the image. It is recommended you use a web page editing tool like Adobe Dreamweaver that can create some of the Javascript for you.

2. Open your graphics software if you don't already have a series of images showing the rotation of the image.

3. Use your graphics program to make copies of the original image, each rotated slightly more than the previous one, until you are back to the original image. If you're using a 90 degree rotation each time, you would end up with 4 images.

4. Export these images as individual JPG or GIF files.

5. Click on the original image in your web editing tool and name it something like Rotate_Me in the Properties panel of your web editing software or in the HTML code. The code would look like: img src="/Smilies/Smiley1.png" alt="Smiley1" name="Rotate_Me" width="109" height="109" id="Rotate_Me".

6. Click at the top of your web page and choose Behaviors from the Windows menu (Dreamweaver). If you aren't using Dreamweaver, create a roll over button/swap image behavior in your web editing software or skip to step 7 and copy the Javascript from the illustration.

7. Add a new Behavior with the + menu and choose Swap Image as the type. Use the Browse button to locate the second file in your rotation. The illustration shows the Javascript code automatically generated by Dreamweaver. Copy this to your web page if your web editing tool doesn't auto-generate the code.

8. Click into the HTML code for your page, and insert the javascript you see in this next illustration into the HEAD section of your page, above the //-- and

/script tags. For a shortcut, you can download this code from Danilo Celic's online tutorial on rotating images with Dreamweaver (see Resources).

9. Customize the code to reflect the location and file names of the images that make up your rotation, and adjust the time between image swaps to control the speed of the rotation. 1000 = 1 second, so the code default is 5 seconds between image swaps. Your code would look something like Array('Smilies/Smiley1.png','Smilies/Smiley2.png','Smilies/Smiley3.png','Smilies/Smiley4.png'); and var delay = 1000;

10. Remove the unneeded MouseOver command Dreamweaver added to the BODY tag when setting the Swap Image behavior. You will find the code just below the Javascript you pasted in. It looks like: body onload="MM_preloadImages( something1.jpg)" onmouseover= "MM_swapImage 'Rotate_Me','','something2.jpg',1)". Make it look like: body onload="preloadImgs();randomImages();".

11. Find, then replace the image name "rotator" in the RandomImages function with the image name name you gave your Image in step 3. In the example used here, Rotate_Me is the image name so the start of the edited code would look like: MM_swapImage('Rotate_Me', ....

12. Save your web page file, upload it to your webserver along with all the graphics files and preview it in your web browser to test.

Use A Flash Bracket Properly In A Wedding

Use a Flash Bracket Properly in a Wedding

Flash photography is a commonly-used method to get well-exposed images of weddings, especially in poorly-lit, indoor venues. However, if not properly controlled, a flash can cause "red eye," which results from the lens seeing a reflection of the flash in the subject's eyes. A flash bracket helps to eliminate red eyes in flash photography. The bracket separates the flash further from the lens and provides the flash and lens different light paths to the subject. As a result, the flash's reflection is not visible to the camera.

Instructions

1. Attach the flash bracket to the bottom of the camera. Almost all single lens reflex (SLR) cameras have a tripod mount on the base, into which the flash bracket will mount. Depending on the camera and flash bracket combination, you may need an optional mounting plate. This plate fits between the camera and flash bracket and prevents the bracket from rotating.

2. Attach the flash unit to the top of the bracket. Most flash brackets are equipped with a "cold" shoe, a socket into which you can mount an external flash, but which does not provide any electronic connections.

3. Adjust the flash bracket so the flash is higher and to the left or right of the lens. The head of the flash should be 12 inches or more from the center of the lens.

4. Connect a sync chord from the camera to the flash. Sync chords can either mount to the camera's hot shoe, or to an external sync connector on the body of the camera, depending on the camera model.

5. Configure the camera for a mode that supports automatic flash operation, such as through-the-lens (TTL) metering. In this mode, the flash should generate correct exposures as defined by the camera's meter. You may also use manual modes if you provide exposure information to the camera.

6. Aim the flash either straight ahead or, if you prefer, bounce the flash off the ceiling for a softer lighting effect.

7. Focus and trip the shutter.

Use Push To Talk

Push-to-talk phones in use

Push-to-talk service allows cell phone users to connect with one another instantly without having to place calls. Push-to-talk can be used like walkie-talkies as a means of instant verbal communication for business purposes or in emergencies. They can also be used as a low-cost alternative to cell phone calls.

Instructions

1. Choose a cell phone service provider with push-to-talk service plans.

2. Select a push-to-talk service plan that fits your budget. Some carriers include unlimited push-to-talk service with select plans.

3. Identify your own push-to-talk number. Push-to-talk service uses numbers much like telephone numbers. In order to receive push-to-talk signals, other users must have your number.

4. Identify the push-to-talk number you'd like to reach.

5. Enter the push-to-talk number you would like to reach. Some phones allow you to access push-to-talk numbers from your address book or contacts list.

6. Press the push-to-talk button or select the option marked "Alert".

7. Wait for a response. Much like phone calls, someone must answer the push-to-talk alert before you can establish a connection.

8. Hold down the push-to-talk button while speaking and release it when you're finished. This allows the party you are communicating with to respond by doing the same.

9. Disconnect by pushing the "End Call" button on your handset or selecting the option marked "Done".

Gps Systems What To Look For

A GPS system can be a lifesaver. Whether you need it because you just moved to a new town, because you are going on vacation or because you like to avoid traffic, a GPS system can help you navigate the roads with more efficiency than road maps.

Features

GPS systems come in a range of sizes and price differences, which usually reflect the features that the GPS has. When buying a GPS there are certain things you should look for.

Make sure that the GPS system has a backlight for nighttime driving.

Ensure that you can read the screen without too much effort, as you may be driving while using the GPS system.

If you plan to use the "talking directions" feature, ensure that you can understand the voice that gives instructions.

Make sure that the GPS system gives you an accurate estimated time of arrival and lets you know how many miles away from your destination you are.

Purchase a GPS system that has up-to-date software and allows you to download new travel and traffic details monthly. You don't want to be waiting to turn right on a certain street but pass it because its name has changed and you didn't know.

Extra Features

Some GPS systems are now compatible with Bluetooth. If you are interested in going to a restaurant or store, these systems can find that location and call it for you because the phone number is already programmed into it. This provides hands-free calling and eliminates the need for directory assistance.

Some GPS systems can tell you the speed limit in the area you are driving and what your current driving speed is. This helps prevent speeding tickets even if you can't see a speed limit sign.

Many GPS systems have a built-in screen that shows the closet restaurants, gas stations, schools and other amenities.

Remove A Factory Toyota Radio

If you want to replace the radio in your Toyota with an aftermarket stereo, the first step is to remove the factory-installed radio. This may look like a daunting task at first glance, but in reality it's not hard to do if you follow these simple steps to remove the factory radio in most Toyota vehicles.

Instructions

1. Using a trim panel tool, carefully pry out the trim panel that surrounds the climate controls. This will release a series of clips that hold it into place. When it's loose, pull it away from the dash and disconnect the wiring plugs connected to the back. Set the panel aside.

2. Pry up the edges of the trim panel surrounding the receiver. When it's loose, pull it away from the dash, remove any wiring plugs connected to the back, and set it aside.

3. Unscrew the four 10mm bolts holding the radio in place. When the screws are out, pull the radio out of the dash, disconnecting the harness and antenna plug by pulling them out of their respective sockets.

Why Are Fire Emergency Exit Lights Important

Fire emergency lights help show emergency exits during a fire

Fire emergency exit lights are self-contained systems that are wired into a buildings main electricity supply but have a battery back-up that keeps the lights illuminated when the main power supply is interrupted. These lighting systems are used to illuminate emergency exits.

Function

Emergency lighting systems are used in most businesses. Their primary purpose is to illuminate fire exits during an emergency. There are also emergency lighting systems on airplanes that illuminate emergency exits and illuminate a path to the exits.

Types

There are two main types of emergency lighting. There are maintained systems and non-maintained systems. Maintained systems are required for areas with low lighting. According to Neweysonline.co.uk, these systems are used for "cinemas, theatres and anywhere alcohol is served". Non-maintained systems are used in situations where the main power supply has failed.

Legal requirements

In the United States, section 7.9.2.1 of the National Fire Protection Association Life Safety Code states that "emergency illumination is to be provided for not less than 1½ hour in the event of failure of the normal lighting system" (Reference 2)

Edit On A Sony Dvd Camcorder

Sony DVD camcorders allow users to edit without using a computer.

A standard way to share video is to record it on a camcorder, copy it to a computer, edit it and burn it onto a DVD. The use of multiple devices can take time and make the procedure too difficult for some consumers. The ability to record video, burn it onto a DVD and share it with friend and family without a computer is the major benefit of the Sony DVD camcorders. Its touch-screen controls and menu system allows for editing as well.

Instructions

Edit on a Sony DVD Camcorder

1. Divide movies that are recorded onto the DVD before it is burned. Touch the "Home" button, select "Others," and then choose "Edit." Touch "Divide" on the LCD screen and select the movie you want to playback. Play the movie to the scene where you want to divide it and pause it. Select the dividing point and touch "OK" and when "Completed" pops up touch "OK" to complete the division.

2. Create a playlist of the movie sections to burn the DVD in the order you want it. At the "Home" menu select "Others" and then "Playlist Edit." Touch the "Add" option and select the movie you want added to the playlist. The selected scene will be checked and then touch the return option. Press "OK" and then "Completed" to confirm the selection.

3. Add all the movies to the playlist instead of choosing only a few. In the "Others" menu, touch "Add All," then touch "Yes," and when the "Completed" box appears, select "OK." To add all movies by date in the "Others" menu, select "Add by Date." Choose the date by scrolling up and down, then confirm the choices by returning to the previous screen.

4. Delete unnecessary movies from the playlist by touching "Home" then "Others" and then choosing the "Playlist Edit" option. To erase all movies, select the "Erase All" option. Erase individual movies by touching the movie on the displayed playlist.

5. To change the order of the movies on the playlist, go to the "Playlist Edit" screen and touch "Movie." Select the movie you want to move then touch "OK" and return to the previous screen. Select the destination by selecting left or right and press "OK" when the movie is in the right place.

Use A Dvr Without Cable Or Satellite

Cable and satellite users can use digital video recorder services such as TiVo without any special hardware. A person who uses an antenna to receive a television signal can still use a DVR if he purchases a recorder that contains a digital tuner.

Get a Model for an Antenna

Some DVRs rely on cable or satellite transmissions and cannot record signals from the antenna. Such models usually come directly from a cable or satellite provider.

DVR and the Digital Switch

You want a DVR model with a digital tuner, which allows you to pick up signals from old antennas without the need for a digital converter box.

Quality of Video

The quality of a video for a DVR hooked up for a television antenna depends on the quality of the signal received from the antenna. The DVR records what the television receives.

Download Videos from Your PC to Your DVR

TiVo DVRs allow a user to download content directly from the Internet. The user must include the TiVo box on his home network to use this feature. TiVo's website contains complete instructions on do this.

DVRs and Skipping Commercials

Some DVR users watch television shows 15 minutes to a half hour after the show starts to skip commercials during the program.

Common Binocular Lens Designs

Standard compact binoculars.

Binoculars are useful tools for the nature lover and the astronomer alike. They are essentially two telescopes next to each other and allow the user a handheld method for distance magnification. Binocular lenses are rated on their coating rather than their design. The amount of coating determines the quality of the lens.

Coated Lenses

Coated lenses are at the lowest end of the binocular spectrum. Coated lenses have one layer of non-reflective coating. This small amount of coating provides for the poorest image quality regarding viewing distant objects through binoculars.

Fully Coated Lenses

Fully coated lenses are the next step up in the spectrum and provide a higher image quality to the viewer. When binoculars are rated with fully coated lenses, it means that all air to glass surfaces of the lenses have been coated with one layer of non-reflective coating.

Multicoated Lenses

As the name indicates, multicoated lenses have multiple coatings on them. At least 15 layers of non-reflective material are applied. The downside with this rating is that to receive the rating the binoculars need only have one lens coated with the multiple layers. This will provide exceptional image quality and justifies the higher cost.

Fully Multicoated Lenses

Fully multicoated lenses are the pinnacle of binocular lens ratings and therefore cost more than the less coated varieties. They do, however, provide the best image quality possible. To receive a fully multicoated lens rating, the binoculars must have every air to glass surface coated with a minimum of 15 layers of non-reflective coating.

Buy A Sega Genesis

Many of us had an old Sega Genesis as a kid. We remember playing Sonic the Hedgehog and all those fighting games, and probably miss those days. Most of us don't have our Segas anymore. Over time, they've worn out and broken. But even though Sega is no longer manufactured, never fear--old Segas and Nintendos are one of the most popular video game consoles sold at flea markets and yard sales.

Instructions

1. Go to your local flea market, and look for the game shops. If you can't find them, ask some of the other sellers if they know anyone selling video games and parts. Find this store, and look for a Sega Genesis. They should be with the other old game consoles like Nintendo. If you find one that has all the controllers and parts you need, then you're all set. If not, proceed to Step 2.

2. Buy the console itself first. Normally, these will be sold separately for anywhere from $10 to $25 apiece. Make sure to ask if it is in good working order. Purchase one that looks clean, and check that you can push all the buttons. If possible, have them test it for you in the store. Look to see if the ports where you will plug the wires in look clean and are accessible.

3. Check with the flea market for Sega Genesis chords and controllers. There are two chords you need: a Sega adapter that will plug the Sega into the power outlet so you can turn it on, and an RF Audio Switch. This switch hooks the Sega to your TV and lets you choose if you want it to play on channel three or four. If you can only purchase one, buy the adapter first. That way, you can test if the Sega is going to turn on. If it doesn't light up, then your Sega doesn't work, and there's no point purchasing any other parts.

4. Once you have a working Sega console and adapter, purchase the RF Audio Switch if you haven't got it already. If your flea market doesn't sell them, you can buy a new one online at eBay. A new one runs about $8. If your Sega turns on, but it doesn't show up on the TV screen, your RF Audio Switch isn't working, and you'll need to buy a new one.

5. After your Sega turns on and shows up on the screen, you need to buy some controllers and the games of your choice. Plug in the game and one or two controllers, depending on if you're playing against another person, hit the power button, and you're ready to play Sega Genesis.

Buy A Home Theater In A Box

A home theater in a box can be a cost-effective alternative to setting up a sound and video entertainment system from separate components. A typical theater in a box package includes a compact unit that plays DVDs, VHS tapes and possibly CDs, as well as a set of tweeter and subwoofer speakers for surround sound. Systems range in price, brand and options.

Instructions

Buy a Home Theater in a Box

1. Set a specific budget for your purchase. All-in-one home theaters start at several hundred dollars and go all the way up to a couple thousand dollars. Most people who buy these units are looking for a bargain, but try to keep an open budget (maybe under $600) so you can consider different units.

2. Find out which cables and installation tools are included with each home theater in a box. You don't want to bring your new purchase home and find out you need to spend more money to buy speaker cables. Try to find out before you buy the unit if you need certain size allen wrenches or screwdrivers to install the theater.

3. Draw up a mock plan of how you'll set up the theater and bring it with you when you go to check out different systems. You'll want to at least know the dimensions of the room (for cable length and speaker placement) and type of TV (for high definition or other connections) you plan to use. Talk to the salesperson about sound system wattages and what you'll need to fill your theater room.

4. Check out the options for connecting other devices to the sound system. If you plan to use the theater for other things, like playing video games, you need to be sure there are enough audio and video inputs on the system. Two additional input sets are common on most theaters, but some have fewer or none at all.

5. Ask about installation and setup help. Some stores may have an employee who can help you find the best speaker locations for the ideal sound coverage. You're much more likely to get this service if you buy your home theater in a box from an electronics store rather than the electronics section of a department store.

Take A Self Portrait

Take a Self Portrait

It shouldn't be difficult to take a good self portrait, but it can be a trial if you're self conscious. With a few tips and photography tricks, you can capture the inner you just as you capture that inner quality in others. Don't be too critical of the subject; rather, focus on the story of yourself that you would like the portrait to tell. You'll find it's easier than you anticipated.

Instructions

1. Relax. No one is going to be as critical of your self portrait as you are, just as no one is as critical about your hair or make up as you are. Pictures of everyone are important, so make sure you're not hiding behind the camera. Step out in front of the camera and shine.

2. Find a location to take your self portrait that is comfortable for you to be in. Your surroundings have a great deal to do with how you feel, so find a place that you like to be in as that will be reflected in your self portrait.

3. Plan on taking several shots until you find the one you are happiest with. That's the beauty of a self portrait and a digital camera, your time is your own and you can continue for as long as you want until you capture that perfect shot.

4. Set up the tripod and focus on the area that you'll be in. For example, center the chair you'll be sitting in or focus the camera on the fireplace hearth you'll be leaning against.

5. Utilize the timer for the digital camera to arrange yourself and comfortably and attractively. Shoot several shots and then try different angles and lighting. Continue until you are satisfied with your results.

6. Hold the digital camera in your hand to take a close up for your self portrait. Taking a close up will highlight your expression and the emotions in your eyes, often times creating the best self portrait.

7. Ask a friend or family member's advice on which self portrait to choose, if you find you're undecided. If they know you well, chances are they'll zero in on one photograph pretty quickly.

Compare Nikon Digital Cameras

The kind of photos you want to take helps you choose the right camera.

You want a Nikon digital camera, but you aren't sure which one to choose. Choosing is as simple as realizing what you will be using the camera for and what you will need out of it.

Features

Compare the features between several Nikon digital cameras you are interested in and decide which ones would work best for you. Features include how many megapixels, video capabilities, ISO, editing features and others.

Size

Size is another major factor in comparing Nikon cameras. You may want a compact camera--like the Coolpix Style series--that can fit into your pocket or you may be looking for a larger model, possibly a digital SLR such as the powerful D700. There are also many models in between.

Purpose

Some of Nikon's digital cameras are ideal for professionals or skilled amateurs while others are great for sliding in your pocket while out with friends. Nikon's digital SLRs and Life series compact digital cameras are ideal for serious amateurs. The Style series is ideal for taking everyday snapshots.

Buy A Highfidelity Cd Player

When searching for a high-fidelity CD player, make sure to consider the speakers or other output device, as well as the cables you'll use to attach the CD player to the receiver. You don't want to spend money on a good CD player and not be able to hear its true fidelity.

Instructions

1. Decide whether to buy an integrated (single box) CD player or a separate transport and D/A (digital-to-analog) converter.

2. Decide how long you are likely to keep the products and budget accordingly.

3. Budget between $70 and $800 for cables; expect to spend at least $200 on cables to get value out of your investment in a good CD player.

4. Check the recommended components lists in the most recent April or October issue of Stereophile for prices and suggestions of models worthy of auditioning. Read reviews in audiophile magazines and at Audio Review's site to narrow your list.

5. Decide which features you consider essential: headphone jack, remote control (and what capabilities it must have), track searching and programming, digital outputs of various types, display muting, etc.

6. Take some of your favorite CDs to stores you visit. Choose pieces that will challenge the bass and treble, imaging and sound-staging and dynamic range capabilities of the equipment. Bring recordings of music you've heard performed live, if possible.

7. If a CD player sounds good to you in the store, arrange to listen to it at home through your own system. Ask the dealer to provide appropriate cables if you don't already have something appropriate to try.

8. Compare at least two or three models in a short period of time before making your buying decision.

9. Base your final decision on sound quality in your current system, price, dealer service before and after the sale, upgradability and your expectation of how long you will keep the CD player.
